is it possible to just sit in the same spot when the engines are off because doesnt this happen in the game? shouldnt I either start to rise or sink?

In the stock game you can just sit at the same depth indefinitely with the engines off.
I'm sure you will get a number of opinions on this, as there has been considerable discussion as to whether the boat should ascend or descend when stopped. The two major supermods take opposite views. In NYGM the boat will descend. In GWX it will rise slightly.

Phil,
In the real world it's almost impossible to maintain a neutral buoyancy. There are trim tanks (forward and aft) and a neutral buoyancy tank on subs. This allows the crew to compensate for weight changes in the submarine. When you take on fuel or provisions your weigh increases and when you use these the weght will decrease. Each Diving officer when he starts his watch when underwater will try to trim and level the boat out as much as possible. But even if two burly sailors walk forward to aft they can alter the trim, depending which way they go. Also you can encounter current and temperature changes which will effect the salt concentration and alter your buoyancy too. This is kind of simplistic way of telling you. There's a lot of guys that can put this to in a more articulate way. Hope this helps you out.

Keeping a boat trimmed was such a delicate thing that even the cook had to keep a log of what provisions he used for every meal and where in the boat he got them from so they could manage the weight balance!

I got a really good impression of how delicate it was when I read Das Boot. I never thought that moving a sack of potatoes from fore to aft would have an effect. I also never thought about the sudden weight loss when firing torpedoes and having to pump large amounts of water in very quickly to stop the boat breaching the surface. It's a fascinating read and you get all the detail on life in a sub that the film couldn't capture....why do I get the feeling this post should be in another certain thread...:shifty:

I personally use NYGM's 'Anti-hummingbird Mod' because it reminds me of the way Aces Of the Deep used to make me feel. Of course before that I just said "this isn't right" and never stopped underwater.:yep:

If you manage it properly and you stop in the path of a convoy you can decimate almost everything:arrgh!:
