Starting patrols before Sept 1, 1939?

Prior to the British declaration of war on Sept. 3, 1939, approximately 26 front-line u-boats were on station west of Great Britain and Ireland. To do this they would have sailed prior to Sept 1, 1939, most likely around August 20th to 25th at the latest.

Therefore, my question: is there any way to start a patrol prior to Sept. 1, 1939; early enough to be on station west of Great Britain before the Sept. 3, 1939's declaration of war. Leaving port on Sept. 1 (the earliest game time that I know) just doesn't allow enough time.

I believe the game only starts new patrols on the first day of the month
You can change files and you can start on Aug 1st
Damn long wait with nothing to do for a month though

If I'm not mistaken you sail out before war is declared. It usually comes to me over the radio when I going around the northern part of England.

When Im doing twenty four knots flat on the surface I can make
egress from the channel into western approaches simultaneous
to declaration of war.

if you reset the dates of available launch back to aug 1
isnt it true that you can choose your start date in SH3 Commander

I did pick it up but have been a little to busy to play campaign
since I got it. so Im not yet fully familiar.
but if its true you wouldnt have to wait out a full month
and could set out around aug 27/28 this would give you
enough time to clear the channel at normal surface speeds.

If I remember correctly 14 u-boats were sent to the Atlantic on August 19 (or was it 19 boats on August 14?).

Change launch date?

Does anyone know how to set the launch date back to August 1, 1939 in SH3? What cfg files need to be changed?

Yes but we dont all use a hypothetical Ucruiser with endless fuel to run around at 24 kts

No SH3Commander also starts at the 1st of the month

Rather start on the 1st Sept and be in the action as 1st Aug and sit around for a month
Still variety is the spice etc

@ von
Not sure what files would need adjusting mate
Sure somebody will be along with an answer soon though

Yeah I have it but Id have to go back over it because
you have to make sure equip is available on launch date
but its just a matter of details in the flotilla cfg.

pretty straightforward but tedious and meticulous to do it right.

ill see what I can do.
but I do have a bit on the go so it may take a bit.

editing the campaign files?

Morts 02-13-07 07:40 PM

:) wow, that would be awesome
sailing around just for sight seeing
and no enemies to worry about:hmm:

Just a thought, but maybe the GWX team could make these changes in a future update to allow the game to start on August 1, 1939 instead of September 1, 1939. Thus, giving us more time to be on station in the Atlantic on September 3rd.

But this may be a lot of work and of little overall importance after all.

In a nutshell, Flotilla.cfg and Basic.cfg. Open them. Look for every instance of a start year and month combination of 1939 and 9 (a manual process). Change the 9s to 8s. Save. Done.

You must then start your new career via SH3, not SH3Cmdr. You can resume using SH3Cmdr after your first patrol.

And no, this will not form part of a GWX update. Considering you tend to start in a small IIA or VIIB, by the time war is declared you'll be ready to come home! And don't forget, making this change means *every* player gets this change. I certainly don't want to be starting on 1 August.

Best left to the "after sales" market...

Thanks JScones
