ive looked around the site and the download pages but i still dont understand, what is the gwx? how is it different from the stock version of the game which i play? what is it adding? also is there any other downloads i should get like sh3commander?

Yes, definitely get SH3 Commander. And, as Morts said, download the GWX manual and give it a good read. GWX totally reworks SH3.

where is it?

GWX adds about 500mb of new ships, textures, content and realism. You will not be disappointed. It is a super mod of all super mods.
