Rig For Red Automatic??

Saw this at the UBI Daily Dev Answers page today.

Q: airwolf2009: Will there be flooding in the damage spaces in damage control screen? Can you include a general alarm button to press for battle stations and can you make rig for red optional as well?
A: Rig for red will remain automatic for now but there will be a "General Quarters" button in relation to the new crew management. Flooding will remain similar to Silent Hunter 3, and I'm not sure I understand what the question is.

Not to sound like a whiner on this, I think SHIV looks incredible so far and I will buy it without batting an eye, but the rig for red thing bothers me. The earliest sub sims I can remember all had this feature. Why are we taking steps backwards with some of these basic features? :damn: If I am the captain then I decide when we rig for red, not the clock on the wall.
On the bright side, it sounds like we may get some sort of indication of flooding.

I can appreciate your frustration. It's funny too when you consider such a basic feature wouldn't take long to code, and would likely make many happy. I recall similar requests for such a feature when SH3 was originally released.

There are a few things that I liked back in SH2 but have either disappeared or changed form:

- Selectable Rig for Red (I don't want to go to bed yet mom..!)
- Editable Captain's log (I want to remember what the **** went wrong with that torpedo)
- That little chronometer that you could popup at any station (Why do you think you see old guys with these, in sub movies?)
- Controllable engines (I want to travel on the surface with my e-motors)
- Controllable dive planes (I want to dive REALLY fast, so step on it)
- Engines that overheat from abusive use (what do you think this is, a scarab from Baywatch? take it easy with the flank)

If I forget something by all means, be my guest. Maybe I open a thread about this. You know, a trip down memory lane.... :hmm:

Yeah that would be a great laugh..... give the crew the night off then when everyones asleep hit the button as a joke :rotfl:

Adding this feature would certainly add to the immersion of the game, especially having an alarm for when battlestations is manned. It wouldnt take that much effort, surely.

i thort the it sh3 it was automatice any way but tha you could still order the crew to change it, or was that just me?

Safe-Keeper 02-07-07 05:49 AM

Would be nice if you could flip switches for blue, red and white light totally at will.

Parker: "Rig for disco!"
CO: "Parkeeeeer!"

im airwolf 2009 from the forum there and i was hoping they will tell me how we will be able to deal with the flooding in the damage control screen but there being real tight lipped about it i just hope its not like silent hunter 2 that was the most terrible damage control screen that i ever saw and couldnt coordinate damage control for anything

Great comments DrMilton

SH I had manual control over Rig for Red if you wished to use it (and had the normal auto rig for red) if this is not in SH IV would really wonder as this should not be a factor at all in "this day and age of computers". I definitely agree with controlable engines - especially if I am ordered to drop off a team of UDT etc. and have to go in close to shore at night. I want to use my batteries I do not need to hear my diesels in the "still of the night".

Playing SH I I remember times I needed to dive deep fast. Hitting the "C" for crash dive moved the planes but I could not control the dive plane angle as much as I would have liked. Repeatedly hitting the "down arrow" seemed to do the trick but always heard the COB say "planes on dive sir!" which can get frustrating. Let us simply choose a steep dive or surface angle to our planes if we wish with either a move of the mouse or the number pad!

Engines over heating - another very good addition. Makes one choose how and when to go to flank speed and puts another spin on the "chase".

And I like the "General Quarters - Man battle stations" idea. Hopefully we hear the bong bong bong of the battle stations klaxon also!!!

Happy Hunting :ping:

Okay, guys, I don't know what "rig for red" means. Someone please fill me in? Does it mean red light?

Yes, during day time you have 'normal' lights and during night time you've got red light which preserves your night vision. Don't know for sure if you 'rig for red' when sounding general quarters as well.:hmm:

Dont forget 5 Degree incremental rudder inputs with the keyboard that have been reduced to "Hard to Starboard" & "Hard to Port".

Okay, so I guess I don't understand...why would it be better to have a selectable rig for red instead of automatic? Don't the red lights come on when it's dark outside, which is what you want?

Yes they do come on at night, and only at night. Thats my point. When I go into attack mode, I want the boat rigged for red, whether its 12 midnight or 12 noon. If I'm hunting in early morning or late evening I want the red mask in my periscope TGA to kick in, even if the clock says "sorry, just a few more minutes yet until its officially dark". When I'm setting up a shot, I dont want to back out to a brightly lit conning tower or map,( I wish the TDC was dimmed as well ). Too me a subsim is all about atmosphere, and lighting, whether its in a movie, or a night club, or a game, is a very mood setting tool. If I want to go deep to ride out a storm, or some escorts, and I know I will be down for several hours, I should be able to flip a switch and go back to normal lighting if I choose to. I guess you get used to having these features in older games and when its taken away, you realize how much you miss it.
