The trees at my local airport are all 2d sprites.

Much safer that way.

Whoa...Skybird....that is one insanely impressive film...looks like some of the stunts I've tried with the helos on BF:DC although I usually wind up hitting the trees part way through it. :hmm:

Very impressive!

Can you imagine flying inside it on the passenger seat? That would be the greatest gluteus, leg, back and arms exercise.

:-?

Amazing stuff. I would NOT want to be a passenger on that flight however, the video was crazy enough for me :p

That guy is the best pilot I've ever seen, but if he keeps doing that, he'll crash someday.

bradclark1 02-03-07 03:43 PM

I wounder if the copilot takes drugs before each flight?

Skybird 02-03-07 04:00 PM

Neal, unfortunately you are right. The pilot was Charly Zimmermann, German champion in this field. And sadly, as far as I know, he actually already got killed during a stunt flight that put too much stress on the blades and led them to braking or separating from the main rotor shaft. I repeatedly red comments of flyers saying that ironically he was killed by a trick he tried to fly that he warned his students of to try themselves (he was flight-trainer for the Bo-105 and also worked for TV film makers.)

The BO-105 is said to be a very agile and reliable, but difficult-to-fly helicopter with a very hyper-sensitive collective (the one thing I hated so much about the EECH game...). It's main role is in the medical rescue (civilian agencies) and communication, recce and anti-tank-role (BW). It's not as heavily armed as an Apache (6x HOT-missiles only) and has far lesser armour and dedicated avionics and targeting sensors, but as the video shows, in capable hands it is a highly agile vehicle. Being constructed in the very early 60s and not fulfilling moden standards anymore, it is now phased out in favour of the civilian Eurocopter and the military Tiger.

Thanks to the guy at simHQ who first linked this video. I did know Zimmermann, but not this video.

That's a damn shame. He had balls and skill, but taking it that close to the edge of crashing, while thrilling to watch, means that the slightest mistake or problem spells disaster. And even the best make mistakes.

Remember the old saying:

There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots.
