U boat types....historical availability?
 
Hi Guys,
Thank you all for welcoming me aboard, im very much looking forward to getting into SH3...and hopefully do my duty!! I have a question...were VII u boats available at the start of the war? im not sure they were....was it the type IIA up til 1940?? any historical help would be great..

Short answer, Yes. The type VIIb's were available at the start of the war.
I'm sure you'll be inundated with replies from people more knowledgeable than me as to how many, where, what color:) etc.

At the start of the war the VII, VIIA, and VIIB were active. This is from a historical standpoint.

(VII and VIIA are the same thing)

Germany had 57 U-boats at the start of the war, of which 30 were various Type IIs, and 27 were modern types, of which 10 were Type VIIA, 8 were Type IXA, 2 were Type IA and 7 were VIIB.

Actually that site says they are (just that they are erroneously called VIIA) :88)

Yea, the right designation is Type VII.

Good read on the differences between the types though - didn't know the early VIIs had a single rudder for example! :D
