Two things i love about early war

Early war to me, is generally BORING. Its like being at carnival shooting gallery. But im trying to stick it out with U-64 in 1940. Im gonna bring that IXB into the indian ocean in 44, thats my plan anyway.

But the two things i love.

1.) Night surface attacks. I dont normally get to do those.

2.)Something im REALLY ENJOYING. Payback for all those times they passed by me, waving their neutralilty under my nose later on in the war:

VIVA LA FRANCE! MUAHAHAHAHH

Im enjoying this now while it last. Damn 'em! :rotfl:

The best thing I like about early war is I get to return and start a second patrol. That is as far as I go:smug:

Early war is great as you can get away with taking a few risks. As years go by though things get really tough. I tried one career in 1944 and I got sunk 50km outside the harbour on my first patrol:cry: :nope: :nope:

By 44, you live and die by a snorkel. Ive survived the entire war before, but let me tell you, the only time i surfaced was at the end of the patrol when docking. Anytime i popped the hatch, about 1 hour later id have an aircraft sending me back down again.

Oh I know that. I did survive the war before in GW 1.1a but in GWX :hmm:

I was at snorkel depth with my snorkel up. A couple of bombers came over and bombed me. I took quite a bit of damage and I was trying to fix it when a couple of DDs arrived to finish the job. You know what? They succeded:nope: :nope:

The thing is, you run on batteries, and only raise the snorkel mast up long enough to charge them, and then lower it again. you really dont want anything breaking surface for very long in late war. the Two hours or so with the snorkel mast up to charge the batts is enough for me. After that, i scamper back down into the depths, with the acceptance, that its going to be a LONG patrol getting to far away grids creeping along at 3 kts 90% of the time. However, the mid ocean airgap still exists.

Thanks for the tip:up:

I'll try it again. Most probably I'll die but at least this time I hope I will have the chance to fire a torpedo first

Truthfully late war isnt about sinking ships, its about surviving. Gamplay wise it sucks.

Generally speaking, SH3 has modeled late war fairly well. If you've read books like "iron coffins" youll come away with the impression that 5 mins on the surface is a long time, and you'd be exceptionally lucky to be unmoleseted on the surface 20 mins. To parahprase one book, the uboats were forced underwater, and without their surface mobility basically became floating minefields, only managing to sink ships that happen to blunder accross their path. Which as you know, in SH3, is fairly rare. You usually have to manuever on the surface to gain a firing position. Late war, you really don't have that option.

I totally agree with you in this one. After 1943 things do get really difficult. My aim as well is to survive. In my last career in GW 1.1a I was trying to go to theaters of operations that were a bit softer (like the baltic, the areas around Finland etc). I am trying the best I can but it's been quite a bit of times that I finished a patrol with one or even no ship in my log book. I don't know it's tricky and mighty difficult but I'll give it one more try. Who knows we might survive to write a book about it;) :D

One thing about 39/40 you can get in real close on the surface and scare the heck out of ships that travel on there own or in two's. You got to be a bit more careful in 41 as they start to fight back with there deck gun. And yes as the war goes on it becomes a matter of survival so you better rack up your renown points in the early years.

2 good things about early war:

1. Unarmed merchants.

2. Merchants with no guns.

Early war yes the happy times I went to the "Far East" in 44 and yes it's peaceful there for a while but sooner or later your patrol gids will take you through some nasty places, shallow waters v US Subs, boredom, planes, and more boredom, and on occasions go chase a TF. there's about 5 only 3 contain BB's (ONLY FOUND 2)
