Das Boot
After going into my local virgin to get my daughter her birthday present, i thought i would have a look at the dvds.
I found 2 differant versions of this film. One being the directors cut and the other is one that runs of 3hrs 15 minutes Out of the two which would be recommended by the radio room. Thank as i realy want to watch this film. Sorry i think i have posted this in the wrong room |
You'll probably get a thousand answers for this one. Which is a good thing.
As far as I'm aware there are 3 versions of it on DVD, the "normal" theatrical one, the Director's Cut which has some more stuff in it, and the over 5 hour long Uncut version. I'd go with the Uncut one because...well it's uncut. It also has both the German subtitles and the dubbed in English track on it as well. I prefer the subtitles even though I don't have to use them that often because watching Das Boot in English (even though as far as dubs go it's not too bad since most of the main actors speak English too and do their own dialog) to me is like watching Bronco Billy in Russian. Yeah it can be done, but...well just but. ;) If you can find the Uncut version I'd grab that, if not (or if you don't have the patience for 5+ hours) I'd get the Director's Cut. The theatrical version is just way too cut for my taste, but taste varies. Now my girlfriend will sit and laugh at me for about an hour for me saying I have any taste at all. :rotfl: |
Hi All
I have the uncut, directer's cut and one I just got called SUPERBIT. Is this last one what you call theatrical cut? |
Thanks for your reply Schatten. The only i ask is i cant make up my mind as to which copy to buy.
If i was to get one copy i would only be thinking if only i had got ....... if you understand |
Well I got the six part TV version and the Director's cut hardly any differences between them, the theatrical version is far to short.

I have the uncut and the director's cut, have not seen any theatrical cut for sale where I am.
The uncut version is longer by an hour and a half, so if you really really like sweaty Germans this is for you. However I prefer the director's cut (from the SUPERBIT collection - check it out). As it is shorter, it is a little bit easier to handle in one sitting, especially if you plan to watch it more than once. Also, the picture and audio in the director's cut have been remastered so that they are noticeably improved over the uncut version. |

But I agree with the others: if you can find it get the 4:52 Uncut version. It's the best. |
I have the Sony superbit. The superbit is the "director's cut", 209 minutes or whatever. As I understand it, only the theatrical release has the "director's comments" track. The "uncut" and "director's cut" versions are missing this audio track.
So, I guess there is something to be had on each version. :hmm: |
