Dugout canoe range difficulties

In GWX, at 9 knots, I can't even get a Type IIA to last 5 days before it runs out of fuel. What in blazes? This is unacceptable. I'm not one to complain about range, but this is just impossible. The IIs were usually at sea for about 2 weeks on end and I can't keep mine at sea for any more than 5 days?!

The most fuel efficient speed is probably 6 or 7 Knts not 9. To check which speed is best, after you are out of port set the speed at various values and ask the navigator what range you have at that speed. Make sure you are not in recharge mode when you do this. You will have enough fuel for two weeks.

Alright. I'll try that. I'm used to the most fuel-efficient speed being 9 knots, but that's in a VII or IX boat. Thank you.

Don't forget to dock with the milch cow as you leave the harbour :rotfl:

Ahead 1/3. Runs about 6 knots. Three to four weeks travel time, if you go Ahead Slow while in the patrol zone. Probably they didn't have that much food.

Food is not important in SH3 fuel is.

1) It was sort of a joke.
2) Some of us strive for realism, even if it's not in the game. I found that with proper fuel management I could keep a type VIIb out for 85 days. Hardly realistic, and I try not to do it anymore. I try to imagine I'm really the captain, with all his problems.

:know: If ya renezvous with a Milchkuh outside the harbour, you can do a victory lap by the dock

Sailor Steve is right.

Cruising speed for a Type IIA should be 1/3 speed, which is about 7 knots in calm seas, 6 knots in heavy seas.

Once in the patrol area, I cruise submerged in daylight at slow speed, which allows for hydrophone searching, then recharge the batteries on the surface at night also at slow speed.

Using this method, a Type II can even reach Scapa Flow from Kiel, patrol for a couple of days then return to base. You should be able to stay at sea for 14 days that way.

Iron Budokan 01-06-07 08:00 PM

9 knots is way too fast for those little dugout canoes. Slow or 1/3 is best...same goes for the bigger boats, too. Fuel is crucial. You will always have oranges in your command center, along with a ham and bananas. But you can run out of fuel darn fast if you crank up the engines.
