Hull under - Conning Tower on the surface

Is there any way to setup my sub into position: hull down (under water) but the coning tower is on the surface with watch crew? There should be an option like that.

Yes, i know that topic but you can't use deck gun in that position. I think that should be an order like: surface, periscope depth and hmm... flood the decks.

Jimbuna 12-23-06 06:42 AM

You can set your depth at 7/8 metres (decks awash)

bigboywooly 12-23-06 09:23 AM

If your watch crew are on deck then the guns are usable
UNLESS the weather is real bad then you cant

Hakahura 12-23-06 09:39 AM

Set Depth 7/8 meters. Works for me!

Oh, unless your driving a Dugout. If Type II is your thing, then set depth to 5/6meters. Any deeper and you end up running off batteries so you might as well go periscope depth.

They couldn't in real life. Decks awash means just that-the water is running over the deck. The loading hatch for the gun is in the deck. If you can shoot the gun, water can rush into the sub.

Yeah, I know, but I really think that should be an options in game like: Surface (deck gun available, like now), Decks awash (only Coning tower is on the surface, deck gun not available), Depths (periscope, schnorchel, etc.). Maybe SH4 will have it.

totally confused here

are you saying we need option 2
or are you saying we have option 2?

1 ) Surface (deck gun available, like now),
2 ) Decks awash (only Coning tower is on the surface, deck gun not available),
3 ) Depths (periscope, schnorchel, etc.)

or are you saying we have option 2 and we should not be able to use the deck gun?

Because 1, 2, 3 are available in GWX

Slight correction mate. The ready supply of ammunition was kept in watertight compartment(s) in the deck... The gun's ammo chute was in the conning tower... and used after the ready supply was exhausted.

At any rate, use of the gun while decks were awash was a dangerous proposition. Primarily for the men manning the gun.

So only the ready use would be flooded at decks awash? And as for the chute being in the conning tower, wouldn't it open to a door at deck level? I'm sure they didn't pass it down from the bridge.

Now I'm less arguing and more confused.:88)

The ammo chute (when present) was not at deck level... it was (IIRC) roughly shoulder height up on the con. Rounds were passed partway up the con. (exactly how far I don't recall... to wherever the cute feed was.)

Also, if manning the gun when decks awash... it would stand to reason that they may not bother with the ready ammo stash.

Another detail... (please use as desired LOL) IIRC the the rounds wherever they were stored... were stored in waxed tubes to repel seawater. (of course this does not guarantee eventual contamination)

I'll try a different tack: The main points of decks awash are to lessen the chance of being seen and facilitate dive times. Using the deck gun seems to be contrary to both of those. If using the deck gun when decks awash it would probably be realistic to not push the dive button until at least 30 seconds after you were spotted by an escort, remembering that in real life you would also be running on batteries.

Now, how many recorded instances are there of a submarine using the deck gun while running decks awash?

Hi All Merry Xmas

Is there a hotkey for decks awash or do you do it manually with mouse cursor and depth gauge in GWX?

Jimbuna 12-26-06 07:12 PM

'Manually'...set your depth to 7 or 8 metres

and a merry xmas to you :D
