Attention Brits!!! Article in today's Times (19-Dec-2006)

For anyone living in the UK, there is a full page article on U-864 in today's Times (19-Dec-2006, page 27). The article describes the sinking, and that the U-Boat was carrying mercury - which now poses a serious environmental hazard. See the links below for a copy of the text of the article.

Furthermore, a television programme about the sinking - called "The Hunt for U864" will be shown on BBC2 on 05-Jan-2007 at 21:00 GMT.

Thanks for posting this. It is both interesting and slightly terrifying. I wonder what other toxic substances are waiting to be released as these old subs corrode to dust.

Just curious - Are you the same Dietrich from 21st Flotilla Sturmgruppewulf? I was sorry to see that forum die off, as I was looking forward to joining once I gained enough experience to avoid embarassing myself.

Yes, an interesting read. Thanks for the TV time, noted and will be watching.

Just read it. Thanks a lot for sharing it with us:up:

Hitler apparently believed that if Japan could regain air superiority in the Pacific the United States would have to divert resources from Europe.
What the hell was that mad man thinking???

Thanks, melnibonian for the articles.

There be a U-boat somewhere loaded with gold...so I hear.

Bad news with that much mercury releasing into the sea.

Yes, that was me. 'Twas a shame to see 21st go quiet, but these things happen. Since then I've found two other online SH3 groups in which I'm now active, so I'm still about and active. ;)
