Using rear torps

After a while on land (world of warcraft) I set off to sea again (eagerly waiting GWX:rock: ). Messed about and decided to get rid of all my mods and get a clean install awaiting the GWX mod.

Thought I may as well do the training as I never have had 100% before, especially on the convoy and the torp sessions. Tho this time, for the first time, I used the rear torps to good advantage. In the torpedo session my first shot was at the merchant at 160. Basically just fired my rear torp and it must have critically hit as it went down in one. Downed the 2 in fromt of me in a few torps (a couple of duds) then turned 90ish to aim my boat at the merchant with the tanker in my rear torp sights. Again, the rear torp took the tanker in one whilst the rest of my torps were used up chasing that bloody last merchant! result - excellent:up:

Then, the convoy. Never been good for me this one, due to my noobness. But this time I thought no, i'm gonna clean up. Used up all my torps and left just one merchant. Destroyers circling above me like vultures, mixture of silent running and dead slow made it an age before I caught my prey. Only 2 torps left in the rear, i stealthed through all the depth charges that were being dropped in the wrong place (dumb ass destroyer) I slid under my prey and raised to periscope depth. 1 rear fired torp and it was down.:yep:

Dived to a safe depth as the destroyer and trawler charged in and, to my amazement, started to attack each other. Dead slow and silent running I rolled underneath them watching them cannon obliterate each other. Finally I arose and finished the mission - excellent:rock:

Never really utilised the rear torpedoes before, was quite chuffed that I did everything using all the weapons to my disposal.

I only use my rear torp to finish off hunting DD

I use them for Hunting DD/Escorts
and I also use them against lonely merchants , to save my Front Bow when encountering a convoy

Whatever, you have to use them on something, wouldn't look nice to come back home with them torps on board..;)

I use them when the opportunity arises. Usually, while attacking a convoy I fire all my bow tubes, make a 180 degree turn and fire the aft tube.

In early war I put fast running torps in the rear and slow running torps in the front.
If your lucky you can fire the bow tubes and then spin around fast enough to fire the aft tubes before the DDs know about you.

i mainly use my rear tube for the FangshuBe, saves wasting my forward tubes on something especially if there's a few targets in the area.

I have always used my rear torpedoes as a defense against DD/DE and 9 times out of ten I usually go back home with them. but for me its always been a sense of security issue when I'm going back through the channel between Calais and Dover as there are so many ships looking for you, mines, and shallow waters in that area I don't want to go back with no defense if I get caught.

But my philosophy is begining to change, on that normally when I do get a warship near me in that area I just dive go silent and creep away until its gone and the way I figure it if I do end up attacking a warship there I would probably have every DD within radio distance on top of me in no time so I may change my ways for now
but later on in the war when ASW gets better I may reconsider and take a couple of torps back with me especially with GWX!!! we will see.

i have used the rear torpedo in convoys a couple of times. i will wait for the convoy such that a C2/C3 passes ahead of me, and a tanker behind. in most convoys there are tankers somewhere (near the center), so it's possible.

this way, i will fire 2 bow torps to the C2/C3 and (if i'm fast enough) the stern one to the tanker :D :D . then dive and get out of there as soon as possible, as you are giving away your position like this. but it usually works. so, stern torpedos do have some use, i find.

see you!

I only use them as a last ditch effort, otherwise they are my reserves.

Nice to hear differing strategies...tbh i used to never use them, only if I run out of forwarding torps. But now I think they could be a good convoy trasher. Not to botheredf about security against DD's, since I normally run and hide like a big girls blouse:roll:

Can also use them to finish off a wounded freighter, you have plenty of time to align and shoot...

ReallyDedPoet 12-15-06 12:30 PM

In reading various sub books they were used quite frequently. Like most I will fire off the bow ones, the 180 for a stern shot.

peterloo 12-15-06 08:33 PM

Well, I like keeping bow and stern balanced.

Example: A Type VIIB has 4(loaded)+6(internal reload)+1(external load)=11 in bow compartment, 1(loaded)+1(internal reload)+1(external load), in this case, I would first use 1 bow+1stern against lone merchants so that I can enjoy external reload.

Once all fish are in internal stores, I have 10 bow + 2 stern torpedoes For me, for each 5 fish I fire, I will fire 4 bow + 1 stern to keep it balanced. I prefer keeping 1 bow torp. home to protect myself against lone patrol DDs.

If you have an easy shot, like a lone coastal merchant, I'll use the rear torps. The front tubes are a little more flexible to use in different situations, and I'd prefer to run out rear torpedoes first.

In the IXD2, you get quite a lot torpedoes for the aft tubes- 2 in the tubes, 2 in internal stores, and 4 (I think) in external stores. This gives quite a lot of options.
