identify ships.

hello,
i got a problem with identifying ships
i have low realisim on shIII so it's automic identify ships.
but i never know when the ship is a merchant, on wich side it is (if i am at long range)
the flags are to small, for example:i cant see the difference between the german flag and other red flags.
how do you guys do this??
thx:up:

Several ways : if you don't want to "cheat", you have to close up to less than 1000 m for shooting, at which time you are able to see the flag.
If you don't mind about "cheating", use the ship camera to have a close up view.;)
On my french keyboard it is the ";", second to the right of the "n"...

get close and hope it is an allied ship. In all reality I hit the '.' key on the number pad and it will show the outside of your U-boat and hit it again and the merchant will be shown. It is also great for the eye candy.

i sometimes go flank speed on the surface up to my target untill i can see the flag (yea i know its stupid. dont do it!)

or ill submerge to periscope depth and make an intercept course so i can get close enough to indentify the flag

I have stalked ships many times taking hours to set up the kill (Time Compression of course) only to get into position and find out it was a neutral!

I love the realism.

Went chasing a ship report a couple of grids down the coast of Africa from where I was heading back for home. Spun the ship around, lined up a nice head on approach settled in the wait for him to come within range:arrgh!: and got to where I could see his flag tand checked the dates.

Normally I'm more than happy to see a Brazilian! Not this time! Only two months short of them joining the war. I had to turn around and retrace my steps north to go hunting elsewhere.:damn:

If you're using GW you can use the drop menu in the top left corner of the periscope screen. In there you will see all the flags of all the nations and their status with respect to Germany

I agree. Even worse is a sonar contact that you set an intercept course for only to discover later sadly that when in visual range it is nothing more than a fishing boat and not the 10k tonnage of merchant that you were praying for. :damn:

You need to use RPM for identifying a sonar contact.

Thanks for the advise. I'll do some research into this. :yep:

There is a good sound trainer on this topic that you can download from UBRS, comes with tables RPM/speed...
