The way I save my career

Hi, as most of you know, I have a problem and can only play for a little while.

Therefore I have one question. Whenever I save my career, if possible I use the same name, overwriting the previous saved game, so I don't have a lot of different names.

Will this cause a problem. I'm using TGW1.1a.

I know this is probably a stupid question. But I don't really know and I thought I'd ask, because in the present mission I am doing this; never done it before.

Okay, you guys can have a laugh, I don't mind, but I really would like an answer.

No ones gonna laugh Rob

Everyone saves differently and similary the way people save affects different people in different ways

Some people have problems saving one way while others dont

Its one of the many SH3 quirks

Each installation has its own mind

I save mine with the date so I know where I am - a habit I got into in the Wolfpack Campaign and that works for me

I have noticed though that the more saves you have then the longer SH3 seems to take to load

Basically its whatever works for you Rob

Rob, noone in here will laugh, believe me. This is a mature forum, and i hope it will continue to be that.
I agree with bbw; i also save with the dates to keep it easy. And i dont think overwriting should cause any trouble, mate.
And: There is no such thing like "stupid questions", just Stupid answers. All questions are welcome!

Rob mate, I save with the same name most of the time. I only deviate from that when I want to try something rediculous out to see what will happen. I then save under a different name so I can go back to where I was after I die.

I know I'm going to die when I try these things out cos they are usually like what would happen if I try to ram the HMS Hood?

BTW if any one laughs we'll send the boyus around to give em a good talking too!

:D

Sounds like me, too. Virtually every game I save is saved under the name: "save". I constantly overwrite, and never have (yet) encountered a problem. And, like TarJak, now and then I'll save a game with a different name (save1, save2 :D ) for those occassions when I go "Ummmm . . . I wonder what would happen if I did this instead of my usual that for a change".

(For those that are curious . . . this usually results (fairly quickly at times, too) to an "Oh sheisse!!" and a sunk U-boat)

Hi Rob i save using the one save game with the same name all the time just let it overwrite the last save i made. I have never had a problem with this. But it has been said before in this thread SH3 has it quiks so it might not work for all. But it seem to work ok for me. Im sure you will be ok:up:

Rob, I just hope I'm still playing SH3 when I'm 70 years. Come to think of it, that's not too far away. But by then I guess it will be SH8 + the GWXXXSV mod.

Thanks

I would like to thank all of you that have responded. I didn't know if anyone saves using the same name.

Mr. Chris, Albrecht, and Tarjak; I save exactly the way you do, I use a different name if I'm going to deviate from my regular "mission"

Kiwi, I have no doubt that you'll reach 70. But computer and the Silent Hunter Series will be quite different. You'll be "talking" the commands, instead of using keys.

Hello Rob

I usually keep only one career in my My Documents\SH3 folder to help the game be a bit faster while loading. The problem I have is that because I am using SH3Gen and because due to real life requirements (job etc) I cannot play as much as I would like I do save at least once in each patrol. As you can imagine very soon I end up with a huge numbers of save games and my loading times get bigger. Unfortunatelly there is nothing me or anyone else can do about it. It's one of the SH3 issues as I like to call them. Now I use the same name in my save games to save up space and make the game a bit quicker without any problems.

Best of luck mate.

I give a sequence number to my saves with base/patrol nr/save nr. For instance Wil201 would be save nr 1 during 2nd patrol out of Wilhelmshaven. As a patrol takes me an average of 2 weeks real time, I save quite often. I never re-save on top of a previous save (overwriting) as I remember having one time a problem in the past. Never had a problem saving submerged or near other units. Only no save near base because of the impact on Harbor Traffic AI boats.
I only keep the 2 last saves and regularly delete the rest directly in My Documents/SH3/data/cfg/Careers/"YourKaptname"/0 folder ( 9 files + Crew_config file for each save).

I constantly overwrite previous saves and have had no problems doing this. In my career there are just two names for my saved game "Surfaced" or "Submerged" depending which I was at the time of the save.

I have been overwriting the previous save for AGES, and no problem have been seen so far (except that you cannot roll back to the past once you got screwed up by enemy)

That's right Rob. I have seen some posts referencing (or a mod somewhere that allows) voice commands in SH3 and have been toying with the idea of trying it out. Has anyone had a good experience with this?

Sailor Steve 12-04-06 06:08 PM

Since I run several careers concurrently I save each one using the kaleun's last name. No numbers; each one overwrites its own previous save.

I have had absolutely no problems.

Jimbuna 12-05-06 08:35 AM

Weren't nothing wrong with your question Rob
Similar to Steve but followed by a sequential number in case I ever need to go to a specific period in the patrol (even more so during the beta testing of GWX)
Best Wishes
