Problems problems

Hi everyone. Ive trying to use your excellent FAQs and help pages, but I still got a headache trying to intercept a ship that gets reported for me.

What im asking is. what if my submarine is INSIDE the circle I draw? In other words. what if I dont get a point where the circle and a line crosses.

What then? I hope my picture can explain my questions better than my words.

Your multiplier is too large. Don't use 10x, like you're using in your example (i.e. you're going to go 10 knots, multiplied by 10, so you make a 100km radius circle). Use something like 3x or 5x.

If you used 3x, for example, that means that you would only measure 18 km down the target ship's vector, instead of 60 km as you've done in your example. Then, you would make the radius of your circle 30 km, instead of 100 km as you've done.

Give that a whirl and see what you come up with. :up:

Um.....I think you are making harder than it has to be. The picture you have, if I want to intercept the enemy ship that is heading NW, I would also head NW at a degree that will close my boat to the ships course. Furthermore, I would run ahead and ambush on the enemy track.

He's using Dannetoc's intercept method. From this post here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=88961

Its actually not hard at all, once you get the hang of it. Nowadays, I can plot intercept courses in seconds using that method :know: The good part about doing it that way is that you only have to do a minimum of maneuvering to get into position for a textbook 90 degree AOB shot.

Started out a mission (dont know the count) to try this strategy, and of course it works brilliant. I was too hang up on the 10X multiplier.

Too bad that you cant get a more precise direction and speed though. I guess some just have to slip away. Thanks for the quick asnwers.

And btw. Great forum for all my problems. ;)

Here's an approximation for determining actual speed from reported speed for merchants and convoys:

If they're reported as "slow" that means they're going 1-8 kts
Medium = 8-12 kts
Fast = 12+ kts

As for finding direction, you're on your own.

I find on average most are doing 7kts.

mookiemookie 12-02-06 06:56 PM

That's what I've found, too. I usually plot them as if they were doing 8 kts, since I want to get there early with plenty of time to set myself up for the shot.

Aye. I just spent around 2 hours on a patrol and sunk 3 merchants with the new calculations. Not too bad for a type IIA sub I think. :D

Anyway, I can definately see a learning curve in this game, I love it. I also did just as you said. I usually set my speed to get there early. better to wait a little longer than miss them altogher.

Thanks again for the quick answers.

Yes sir, your u-boat is definitely fit for ambush attack. Run ahead and let the follie come to you:up: See you in the Atlantic:D
