Actually, people familiar with the emblems of the various historically well-known U-boats will recognize the "daisy" as being an "eidelweiss".

No, not even close.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edelweiss
Quote:

- The Edelweiss is the sign of German and Austrian alpine troops, granted to them in World War I for their bravery.

- During the Second World War, German soldiers occasionally pinned edelweiss flowers to their uniforms. The flower was supposed to be the sign of a "true soldier" in the Wehrmacht as it grows only in rugged terrain, generally above the tree line.

The emblem of U-124, the Edelweiss, was inspired by the loss of U-64 in April, 1940 as the boats were largely manned by the same crew, including the commander and saved from the Norwegian waters by members of the German mountain troops using that same emblem.

Edelweiss

According to the book Grey Wolf, Grey Sea (E.B. Gasaway), the crew of U-124 decided to adopt the Edelweiss as their insignia because the German troops in Norway who helped rescue them from the sinking of their first sub (U-64, I think) had it as their insignia. It is a type of mountain flower which grew in the region, apparently.

When Schultz (U-124's first commander) stopped to help the crew of the Lake Ship SS Trevisa, her captain used the Edelweiss insignia to locate Schultz to meet with and thank him after the war.:yep:

EDIT - Didn't see that last post Ducimus. Sorry. :damn:
