Dud Eels
Ahoy Shipmates, I have just sailed across to Scapa Flow in late 1939 (Obtober), along the way I sank a couple of cargo ships, no problems there. But when I got close to Scapa I engaged a J Class destroyer, firing 4 eels, all of them bouncing off like Pamela Anderson hitting the floor after 10 cans of Stella.
My range varied from 1400 meters to 300 meters and I also alternated my eels from magnetic to impact after the first 4 missed. I have engaged destroyers in the past and killed them with 2 eels alone. Is this a bug or just lack of experience, bearing in mind this is my 9th patrol in total of playing SH3 through various years. I am now stuck 40 meters down with no eels left and 2 J Class destroyers circling above on the surface like a pair of starving vultures, my crew are shaking like an epiletic having a fit in a biscuit tin and my tower has been completly destroyed from depth charges. i am about to tell the radio operator to put on the gramaphone and I am going to issue out a crate of snapps that i bought the crew for xmas and we are all going to sing christmas carols before we sleep with the fishes of the cold north sea. In a word.....HELP!!! lol |
There is a difference between duds and torps that fail to explode due to "glancing" shots off the other ships hull. What angles were you catching him at?
Chuck |
im not sure now, about 5 degrees either way, what angles do you recommend?
|
Get to within 1 or 2 degrees of 90 and you should have no problems.
|
Within 5 degrees you should be fine, must have just been duds. I think there were problems with duds early in the war.
I have em about 4m deep impact only early in the war except against the large cargo which I get under at 10m and magnetic. But only in calmer seas. Chuck |
:-? I hit a Escort almost everytime.
maybe some duds because the Escort at the sudden sees my bubble trail and accelerates so I hit around the screw where it fail to explode. Mostly with T1 I get in a range of under the 1000 meters and set on FAST speed for the T1 EEL. so where do the impact of the torpedo takes place? |
Make sure you're taking the curvature of the hull into account when firing with impact pistols. Shallow draft ships like DDs are tough to hit with impact pistols without setting your fish so shallow that they end up broaching the surface.

Try to hit the Destroyer at an AOB of about 90deg, and make sure you have a small gyro-angle (fire only once the little triangle is green in the scope). Also remember that Destroyers have short drafts so set up your running depth for the torpedo to 1-1.5m. That way you will avoid hitting them close to the keel where the torpedo might bounce off.
Good Luck |
