SH4 Newsflash--Ubisoft ask what we want in the box

Over at the official SH3 forum Audible Knight the Ubisoft community manager has posted this message

"Thanks to everyone for all the great ideas posted here . It got a bunch of people here talking about what we can do in the in-box packaging to make sure YOU guys are happy. Here's a list of some of the items being considered:
  • POSTER: Historic map of the Pacific Theater that is ideally useful to gameplay (i.e. routes, locations of famous battles, etc.)
  • POSTER: Ship recognition guide
  • POSTER: Silent Hunter 4 artwork
  • Spiral bound manual
  • Laminated keyboard diagram for quick reference "
What we'd really appreciate from you, is to rank your preferences in order (1 = most wanted, 4 = least wanted) with any special wishes for them. Also feel free to give us any suggestions that you'd think would be cool that isn't on the list.

Ranking:

This is how I would rank them, from most to least important:

1. POSTER: Historic map of the Pacific Theater that is ideally useful to gameplay (i.e. routes, locations of famous battles, etc.)

2. POSTER: Ship recognition guide

3. Laminated keyboard diagram for quick reference "

4. Spiral bound manual

5. POSTER: Silent Hunter 4 artwork

But I would be happy if all five were included...:hmm:

1. POSTER: Ship recognition guide
2. POSTER: Silent Hunter 4 artwork

These would be great, if they were high quality. If it's going to be tiny little pictures in a 3x5 card book stuck in a normal sized DVD case.. no thank you. If the artwork was rolled in a tube and decent poster size, even better. That I would pay $10-20 extra for, not a tiny in box book/paper version.

3. Spiral bound manual

Only if the manual was actually useful. Things like the kts/distance/time charts, availablilty data on equipment/boats, something you'd want to refer to time and time again. Combine in a ship req manual similar to the in game images of SH3, and you've got me!

4. POSTER: Historic map of the Pacific Theater that is ideally useful to gameplay (i.e. routes, locations of famous battles, etc.)

This would be very nice, but will be quickly replaced by an in game version I imagine. Or higher quality versions online. Also, due to standard packaging practices these days the map will be dreadfully folded into 3x5 sized chucks and never properly fold out. A distant 4th.

Laminated keyboard diagram for quick reference

This belongs in game and will be quickly memorized. It will most likely change with patches and updates and become obsolete. Also a QRC should be a basic part of a simulation game not a premium add on you pay for a "Collector's Edition" for. Hence it's not even numbered.

Things that would make me rob a bank in order to get the Collector's Edititon:

In depth making of DVD with video, not just concept art slides. Interviews, study of the process, how you did things and why you did things. Comparison of real video and in game video. It should be 1 hour+ though, not a 3 minute video you can download from the web.

A minature model of a submarine, or even better one of the Yamato and a sub or something. High quality pewter, not light weight plastic.

A do-it-yourself plastic model of a submarine. A 1/700th scale plastic kit or something of a BB, or a 1/144th size sub, something 6-8 inches long maybe?

Full color, hardcover art book.

Replica Naval medals or flags.

Soundtrack CD.

If Ubisoft wants to give us us a collectors edition, they need to give us something to collect. High quality, premium items. Something along the lines of Warcraft III or Age of Empire IIIs collector's editions or even Pool of Radiance's collector's edition, even though that game sucked. :)

:o Nice.

Manual - 1
Poster (MAP) - 2
Poster (SHIP REC) - 3
Poster (SH4 ART) - 4
Laminated keyboard - 5

Good luck!

Don't forget: 'Dood, this sux. Falcon 4.0's key card wuz so much better. Why can't we have Falcon 4.0, but with submarines, and in a different time frame made by a different company and utilizing different styles and tempi of gameplay, different interfaces, commands and overall structure? That's what I want: Like Falcon, but totally different.'

Talk about hitting the nail squarely on the head!:rotfl:
You both have perfect representations of that particular mentality. Thanks for starting my day off right.

Spiral-bound manual considered. Awesome:cool:.

How about just making sure all elements included in the sim WORK. There were a LOT of glaringly obvious bugs in SHIII. Maybe due to the compressed work schedule with the last minute inclusion of the single player campaign.

I think its really sad when modders within the first few months correct bugs that the devs could have fixed with the first patch.

Theta Sigma 11-15-06 08:36 AM

How about one of those little baking soda subs that you'd get in the cereal boxes?

That way, when we have to take bathroom breaks during gameplay, we
have something to watch in the tub before we zip up. ;)

... :)

I have no preference, I've learned to improvise, make do, and adapt (aka) shoot, scoot, and navigate...just make sure SH4 its as good as SH3, sil vous plait.
