Poppy Row

This news item is from Canada, I have heard on the radio there is a bit of a row here in the U.K. over this one. Peace Pledge Union a pacifist organisation is in encouraging people to buy the white poppy instead of the traditional red one.

Red vs white: battle of poppies erupts in Canada

It's bull****. There was a similar one about some people refusing to wear the poppy due to the war in Iraq. Bascially putting a political slant on something that is apolitical.

There was an interesting news item the other day of a journalist who 2 years ago refused to wear the poppy due to the Iraq war and wrote about it.

She was criticised and invited to tea by some Indian war veterans who took her to task and explained the nature of the poppy and what it represents. Since then she has reevaluated her POV and now wears the poppy. Like she was told, the poppy is nothing to do with the politicians who start wars but purely to remember those who fought and died in them.

Just saw this thread having written my own on the upcoming Armistace Day. Sad, stupid and as Xabba said, it's all a load of BS.

There are plenty of us who want to wear the red one.

Don't these idiots know Soldiers are the first and greatest pacifists?

And that if it weren't for them Britain would already be a totalitarian state today?

To summarize them all, Idiots.

In Poland we don't have the tradition to wear poppies since our WW1 history is a bit more turbulent and different. For us the poppies got a much bigger meaning after WW2 and after the Battle of Monte Cassino. There is a well know song in Poland about poppies, so everytime I see people wearing their poppies I think about it.

Quote:

<b>Red Poppies on Monte Cassino
Do you see those ruins on the hill-top?
There your foe hides like a rat!
You must, you must, you must
Grab his neck and cast him from the clouds!
And they went, heedless of danger
And they went, to kill and avenge
And they went stubborn as ever,
As always - for honour - to fight.
Refrain:
Red poppies on Monte Cassino
Instead of dew, drank Polish blood.
As the soldier crushed them in falling,
For the anger was more potent than death.
Years will pass and ages will roll,
But traces of bygone days will stay,
And the poppies on Monte Cassino
Will be redder having quaffed Polish blood.
They charged through fire like madmen,
Countless were hit and fell,
Like the cavalry at Samosierra,
Like the men at Rokitno years ago.
They attacked with fury and fire,
And they got there. They climbed to the top,
And their white and scarlet standard
They placed on the ruins `midst clouds.
Refrain:
Red poppies on Monte Cassino ....
D`you see this row of white crosses?
Polish soldiers did honour there wed.
The further you go, the higher,
The more of such crosses youl'l meet.
This soil was won for Poland,
Though Poland is far away,
For Freedom is measured in crosses
When history from justice does stray.
Refrain:
Red Poppies on Monte Cassino...

This makes me sad. :( Makes me want to wear one even more, would anyone know if Canadian or Uk embassies distribute poppies overseas? Kind of hard to get one in Switzerland.
