GWX Status Report

The other thread is wrecked ...and minor executive problems continue...

GWX Beta version 2.0 takes one hour for me to compress. It compresses to
762 mb. I have some tough decisions to make regarding the final size of the GWX mod that I will be making tomorrow in conference with the team. Anything over 700 mb for the base installation limits its final availability to many users.... even though as mods go it is still well within the "middle of the road" memory size-wise.

I have to go to work in a few minutes... so what I have compressed the beta
into two halves and FINALLY have a hardcopy on CD... This process saved the
GWX ship once already so I am sticking with a plan. I'd back it up on something more dependable... but a CD burner is all I have. My DVD drive only reads.

Tomorrow I can separate it into smaller pieces and begin to upload it for JScones to place in the installer. I'm sorry for another delay... (I even had a power outage yesterday that lasted for an hour and a half.)

I'm beginning to wonder if somebody important really hates me LOL. (Looks skyward. )

I'm doing the best I possibly can mates. I'm slower too because I'm so
tired... I'm triple checking everything and going slow to avoid mistakes.

The good news is that the beta appears to be quite stable. I tried like hell for two days to break it...

... steady as a rock.

I can see this may take a few days with my dial-up. I know it'll be worth the time though.:yep:

I just order a new system and the Greywolfs, GWX, and SHIV are the prime reasons. The days of 1fps and stalls at 1024 compression or heavy smoke are coming to an end.

Thanks GWs and of course my wonderful and understanding wife.

This means beta release in the middle of next week?

Start a patrol and keep yourself occupied. Ive sunk me a couple tankers and a large cargo in ED98, and those waters being semi shalow, that damn patrolling DD was hard to get rid of. Bloody bastard dropped an ashcan that exploded right under my stern planes, rudders, and screws... he really did a number on me, but i shook him loose and got the damaged repaird.

Of course i surfaced and put a coup de grace shot in one of those tankers that i had stopped dead in the water, and immediatly set for flank speed out of the area. I really don't want to get caught by that guy again.

Right about there is were i saved to the game to go to work :P

Stop watching the pot waiting for the water to boil, go play!

I just did! (And took a beating by some strangly unfriendly brits)

Ohh ... how much easier life was when I didn`t know about GW 1.1a, and stumbled over it one day. :rotfl:

P_Funk 11-08-06 10:06 PM

I spent 5 and a half hours last night playing a new career with a VIIC in late 41. After 3 days I ran into a convoy just at the channel and tried a Kretschmer style "in their midst" attack. Late 41 and the convoy only had 3 escorts and only one was a destroyer. I got spotted I think cause I didn't wait for it to get dark enough. BUt I was so close by then that a quick crash dive and reappearing at periscope depth in the middle of the column I was able to quickly sink a Tanker and a C3. about 3 hours was nearly real time carefully maneuvering at dusk to make my attack and the ensuing DD attack.

That's my distraction. We'll see if I can die before GWX comes out.

I am lucky also because I have a fast cable connection. And if GWX doesn't run must slower than 1.1a then I shouldn't have trouble at all.

You could remove the gramophone files and release them as a separate download, that would make the archive 80MB smaller. I never use the gramophone and I´m sure I´m not the only one.

I can do a patrol in one night. :)

I can't see how this would cause an additional week of delay though stabiz. A day to get it to JSCones, a day to get it packed and online, can't see it taking more than 2-3 days (people's schedules willing) really now that the code is finalized for this stage.

As for the 700MB, that's about the same size as 1.1a really. Personally I'd just RAR it up, splitting up into chucks if you needed to. That way those with slower connections could juggle 3-5 pieces of downloads while those with broadband would be able to just download it once, unrar into a install folder and burn that to DVD/CD.

THE_MASK 11-08-06 10:49 PM

I just burn the rar package onto cd . If i need the files later then i copy the rar package into my documents folder then extract .

If I ever have to pull something off backup I assume I'll be too pissy at the moment to bother copying and unraring something. :)

packing the gramaphone files seperately is a good idea.

i always replace the GW versions with the stock ones anyway.. so that i can still use my RPM chart.

That's actually a really good idea. I don't use the grammophone, either. It would sure be nice to not have to download all the music files when I don't use them. I've been meaning to suggest this for quite a while but have totally forgot.

P_Funk 11-08-06 11:56 PM

I do a patrol over a few days depending on whst I encounter. Depends on how fast I use up my torps.

And it is true that the grammophone feature isn't a feature I use alot.

Ducimus 11-09-06 12:05 AM

I use the gramaphone all the time as background music. But then, a good portion of that is from the Dasboot soundtrack and i usuaully only use a couple of GW gramaphone files, never the entire collection as it's been presented in GW11a.
