Pacific Storm: Allies

Pacific Storm is all about battleships and aircraft carriers - the giants of naval warfare during WWII - about captains and admirals, as well as rank-and-file soldiers and sailors of the two great military powers, that locked in a life-and-death conflict. In Pacific Storm you can become Commander-in-Chief, responsible for the lives of thousands of servicemen and the destiny of your country, commanding officer of a small squadron or even an ordinary military pilot, fighting in the sky over the Pacific. And, gradually, as you play, from all these separate bits and pieces will emerge one impressive picture of the great and fierce battles fought in the Pacific during WWII.

Pacific Storm is a game about the war in the Pacific between the U.S. and Japan. It has the elements of a global strategy, tactical game and an arcade air simulator. Playing either for the United States or Imperial Japan, you walk through a dramatic sequence of large-scale naval and air military operations. The game covers the time from 1940 - 1948. As you play, you can develop new technologies, build and deploy new weapon systems or even change history. Thanks to a smooth and seamless combination of strategy, tactics and simulator, you are completely free to take whatever strategic or tactical decisions you consider best or abandon for a time all strategy and tactics and inhabit any of your units so as to take part in the fighting personally. Steel Monster's gameplay combines exceptional depth and scale of the strategic mode, superior authenticity of the tactical mode and exciting dynamics of the simulator.

Looks interesting; can't tell how you play it, though. This "blend" of three styles is confusing me.

A demo is available at

There is an extensive tutorial included that takes you though each layer of play.

Thanks - missed that before.

Tried the tutorial/demo and it looks good. Unlike most tutorials which are lousy IMO. Only problem I have is that the mouse scroll is REALLY slow; changing the sensitivity to try to make it faster made it too fast. That's probably a problem on my end, but I'll have to work it out before I can finish the demo.

Yup, sound's like it's on your end unfortunately, the mouse worked fine for me.

Thanks

Note that the "Pacific Storm: Allies" is actually the sequel/addon to Pacific Storm which will add British and German forces into the mix.

DeepSix 06-14-06 07:26 PM

Well I got the mouse sorted out and played the demo some. First impression is that the game is good but utterly confusing. So much going on, I found it hard to locate and select the unit(s) I needed. Haven't tried the strategic level yet, but I'm not crazy about the arcade feel that the tactical level seems to have. And I saw a V-1 rocket on Iwo Jima. Yeesh. The game has potential, though.... maybe I'll get better at juggling units if I can remember all of the mouse-clicks and key commands.:D

A nice IGN review on Pacific Storm, dated 6-14-2006. The reviewer goes into the management angle of PS quite a bit. Here's hoping people also realize the possibilities of massive 3D ship to ship and air battles this game also supports.

After some failed attempts I have finally downloaded the demo. After reading some lukewarm reviews / previews and looking at screenshots showing a very odd UI, I wasn't expecting much. But I was very much surprised.

This could be it.

If this games will come without the typical problems associated with games from Russia, i.e a more competent A.I., stable programming, and post-release patches, this could be a milestone, game I have anticipated for decades. The game takes some concepts which were forgotten since the good old Pacific Air War by Microprose, the scope of Rome Total War and brings the most indepth, complete, motivating game about the Pacific War or any theatre of war.

From what I see it appears to be moddable as well, so the community could get rid of the bit of arcadishness that remains.

I am immensely looking forward to this!
