Indian Ocean hunting spots?

I just started my first campagin out of Penang. Any thoughts on where to go hunting? Towards India? Down under? The Pacific?

Thanks for any info!:yeah:

Plenty of traffic along the east coast of India, between India and Ceylon and around the coast of Australia.

You can also find traffic in the gulf of Aden and towards the east coast of Africa. Gute Jagd!

Nice convoys heading for the Suez off the South West Australian coastline.

Generally look at points that naval traffic has to pass through. As Jum and TJ said the area around the gulf of Aden and the Suez Canal and around Ceylon is filled with enemy tankers, but unfortunatelly you will have to deal with enemy planes as well. In mid-ocean between Madagascar and India you can actually find fast moving task forces as well.

Good luck

Whats the ASW like in this part of the world? Is it as rough as the Atlantic in 43? :dead:

Should be far less. Since most U-Boats didn't have the range to reach the IO on their own the Allies didn't put as many ASW assets there. Ship traffic is lighter though.

That is correct. Nevertheless there are quite a few escorts and planes in the area and their sonars are getting better and better. Therefore if you get caught (especially in shallow waters in a IX boat) you´re in trouble

yeah i have seen lots of aircraft. no merchants yet though. except the convoy of 8 tugboats. that was dissapointing :dead: hehe

i was thinking as i was sailing around the Indian Ocean yesterday at what the commanders of these boats must have been thinking. Every radio message I get is about something going wrong in the war. They are commanding u-boats thousands of miles away from the Atlantic. The Atlantic war itself is pretty much lost as the last report I got said the monthly losses in Sept 43 were 28 U-Boats for just over 200k of shipping.

Interesting. :06:

I meet a number of troop convoys in the Eastern Indian Ocean. Maybe from Calcutta to the West coast of Australia. Great targets!:arrgh!: Very close to your base in Penang also.

Well I am currently on patrol in indian ocean, but my orders say I have not reached it, or searched for 24hrs. What happens next ?????

propbeanie 06-11-22 11:13 AM

What was your grid assignment? That's where you have to patrol specifically (usually) to fulfill the mission objective requirements...

Nothing bad happens anyway. It wil at most bug your sense of accomplishment/obsessive compulsiveness. But you can choose whatever other grid, go there and hang around for roleplay. You will not be reprimanded for not having gone there. There is some talk about that giving you some renown, but if I remember correctly it doesn't work all the time due to a bug.
