Das Boot - Revisited on DVD
Wow, I just finished watching the full 4,5 hrs session of the TV-Mini Series "Das Boot". It was the first time for me to do so after 10 years. Now with my 52"-TV and a quality DVD-Player, I must say that I am still deeply impressed by this project. And remember that the film is almost 30years old.
I am not sure if everybody is aware, but this is the version that covers the complete story of 283 min, so actually even 100 min more than the Director's cut of the Movie. It is still beyond me why it did not win any academy award at that time (it was nominated though). The first half basically covers the complete life on the boat with all the boredom that you can also feel when playing SH3. They had 3 weeks of stormy weather, just like I tend to experience when playing the SH3 GWX 3.0 Gold extension. The final hour then is all about the drama with the repair team to get the U-boat up to the surface again. Highly recommended. :yeah: Just in case: Here are the links to the DVD: Amazon UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Das-Boot-Min...0083701&sr=8-2). German sound only. Amazon Germany (http://www.amazon.de/Das-Boot-Die-Fe...0084780&sr=8-2). This DVD also offers synchronized English Language option. Mark |

Since I watched the tv series when I was younger I had to buy the movie.I got the Directors cut version first and watched it several times. Then the Uncut original version came out, I had to buy that one too of coarse.
Still use it for demo of 5.1 channel sound. |

I would say that 'Das Boot' certainly fueled interest in U-boat and submarine warfare. I would say that if the Silent Hunter game was based on anything... it may have been based on the 'Aces of the Deep' game by Sierra Dynamix... (or at least SH was a logical evolution following Aces of the Deep) which may predate the movie Das Boot. |
I usually have a problem watching a movie numerous times because you know what to look for and how it is going to end....but some movies such as Zulu and Das Boot et al are exceptions to the rule http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...ies/pirate.gif

I've just finished watching the uncut version for the first time. So much more depth, every character feels so close, like if I've known them for a long time.
And they end up like that after their brave work, their wonderful rescue from the depths of Gibraltar. I'm still :o You know this is the moment when can I say that it was worth to learn German for many years. And also when J'attendrai officially became my favourite song ever. It has so much emotion in it, so much. |

AOD: 1994 The nightclub graphic in Aces was obviously based on the movie. Even the great Silent Service came out a couple of years later. But I agree: Das Boot is more inspiration than direct progenitor of games like these. |
Ah, Aces of the Deep! I loved that game and was so sad when I no longer had a computer that would run it. Then I bought Silent Hunter II, with its horrible scripted campaign - what a disaster.
Thank God I took the chance on SHIII and then found SubSim to give me SHIII Commander and GWX! Thanks, guys! |
If you feel nostalgic, you can still play aces of the deep on your computer. There's a program called "Dosbox" (google) that will allow you to emulate all your classic games (including AotD). I bet thousands of abandonware sites will allow you to download it for free.
