Practicing Modelling Techniques

In developing any 3d game, or any game for that matter, game media such as models, textures, and animations are a high point of praise, or something that brings it down. They may not "make" the game, but it sure helps when you have good looking graphics.

That being said, as of lately I've been expanding my horizons when it comes to modelling, and have been practicing some new techniques.. I've only got 2 things done so far, and, not to brag, but, I love how they have turned out. They're relatively low poly and besides the tank, fully game ready (minus animations).

I have also included a Mystery Model that I began working on about an hour and half ago (it's 1:30am and I have school in 6 hours!) and if anyone can guess what it is, I will donate $5 to SubSim in his or her name, it's time to pay my due and this is a good excuse :know:

Enough talk, here are the models..

AND now the mystery model, unfinished obviously, but what do you think it is?

Correct you are!

Is there a picture you would like as an avatar?

Like mine to the left << is the four aces..

When I donate I'll include you're name and the picture and Neal will change it for you.

And thanks for the compliments Mikhayl, I agree. A good clean texture is worth a lot more than an over-the-top poly level model with a mediocre texture.

Well, I would say that it wholly depends on what you're using the model for

Anyway, nice models, whenever I try to model something I usually end up getting stuck halfway through, saving the WIP and then never going back to finish it

Chad 12-02-08 02:23 PM

Raptor, you should start a new thread and show us some of your WIP's

I lost most of them, as I usually forget to back them up when I'm reformatting my computer after a while, have to see if I still have any

I was thinking about trying to model some stuff again yesterday, might be able to finish something this time

Chad 12-02-08 02:48 PM

Yeah definately! What program(s) do you use?

If you use, MS Paint, Milkshape3d, or UltimateUnwrap then I can help you if you need help.

Also, http://www.the-blueprints.com is a great site for finding good reference pictures when modelling.

Raptor1 12-02-08 02:57 PM

Well, been using gmax for a while, thinking of moving to Blender (Heard a lot of good stuff about it)

I know about The-Blueprints, it's a great site, but if you're looking for aircraft blueprints (I concentrated mainly on aircraft modeling, which was probably a mistake...), airwar.ru has some very high quality blueprints which are much more detailed than the ones on The-Blueprints (Even though they are probably harder to use for that reason too...)

Chad 12-03-08 11:43 PM

Okay Raptor :D it's been more than 24 hours, time to show us what you got!

Raptor1 12-04-08 11:33 AM

Well, I looked through my drive and found this uncompleted P-47 fuselage (Well, it's supposed to be a P-47):

I'm still getting used to the Blender interface (Quite different from what I'm used to), but should hopefully be able to get some results...soon...

Chad 12-04-08 01:49 PM

I like it ! Unlike mine which are more blocky yours is smooooth

Raptor1 12-04-08 02:20 PM

That's only after MeshSmoothing, and the polycount suffers as a result, also the mesh is slightly out of proportion (That could be fixed, probably)

Besides, your models are of things that are more box-like to start with (Thompson, Panzer II...)

nikimcbee 12-05-08 01:57 AM

Wow Chad, those look great.

kenijaru 12-05-08 08:38 AM

nice :P
I've been using Wings 3d for a while but i got a copy of 3ds Max so I'm planing to do some serious modeling.

so, could you tell us your little modeling secret? :know:
