Newbie here with GWX - Need help with Water Texture.

Hey All,

First off, thank you for having this very informative site on here, it's been a wealth of information for myself coming into this community. I recently installed SH3 w/ GWX but was having a bit of a difficulty. I'm having a hard time because whenever I'm out on the deck the game becomes too choppy to function properly and I get beatup pretty bad by Aircraft. I notice though, that once the water gets out of the view of the screen it runs smooth. I'm not one for heavy graphics, I just like the gameplay myself. Considering I have slow computer, I think this is just something I've become accustomed to.

I was wondering, is there any way to remove the textures on the water? I've turned on Synchronizing and turned off High-Graphics on the settings and I don't know what to do next. I notice a lot of "MODS" that are being done, I don't know if any are out there that remove or drastically reduce all the water textures? Please let me know.... thank you for your time.

How 'low end' is your graphics card?

What are your system specs?

GWX was designed to run on any system that could run SH3, the only difference being the longer loading times.

System Specifications

I have two computers, but the only one that has been able to run it so far is my Laptop, so I'm limited in what I can do upgrade wise.

1.73Ghz, 2GB RAM but it's the Radeon 200M so it's a shared-memory graphics card... like I said, it runs fine when the water isn't in the screen, the water just kills me.

I would like to install the program on my Desktop but it crashes everytime I try to start a mission.

For that matter, I don't even know if my old desktop can handle it...

2.66Ghz, 4GB, ATI Radeon HD4850 1GB... buuuut I'm running XP (SP3).

Welcome aboard!

I'm running SH3+GWX3 plus a ton of mods on a newish desktop, about a year old, but with an 2.81 GHz processor, 4 G of RAM, and ATI Radeon HD4650 1 G PCIe gfx card. Windows XP SP3 O/S.

I don't know how much difference the processor makes, but the other specs you mentioned seemed pretty close to mine. And this rig handles the game plus everything I've added just fine. :hmmm:

That's the thing, I'm not running it on my Desktop computer, only my Laptop. When I try to run it on my Desktop, it crashes. So I have to deal with my Laptop.

It sounds to me like your graphics card (shared-memory) could be the weak link in your specs.

You might also want to try updating your drivers.

Shouldn't be a problem with your desktop - it's similar (or better) than my old one. :)

Is it patched correctly? When does the crash occur? :hmmm:

From the specs on the LapTop,
sounds like an HP Pavilion.
That's what I run on.
It has a 128 meg Vid which I shared another 128 megs of system ram to up to 512 meg vid useable.
It's OK as long as I don't try useing the 16K stuff.

The DeskTop should be way better to run SH3.
You have some issue that is causeing the CTD.
Un-install SH3 useing the DVD and clean the registry, delete any old files
in My Documents and check that Ubi folder is gone from Program files.
Then do a new install.

Actually it's a Toshiba, the Video Card was limited to a 128MB share. I got it running on my Desktop now, so far so good.. thanks for all the help, now if I can only figure out how to not die. :salute:
