Getting my old DVD version of the game working.

A while ago I made a post outlining step by step instructions to make Silent Hunter 3 to play in 1920 x 1080 widescreen,

https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/sho...232178&page=11 post #157)

In that post I said you needed to get the STEAM version of SH3 as the DVD version gave an administrative error about incompatibility problems.

The game was originally released for Window 95.

Turns out I was in error.

I have been playing a lot of SH3 lately using my STEAM installed heavily modded game without any problems.

I click on the icon, Steam starts up and the game loads.

The game plays with Steam offline but still starts STEAM up before loading.

Then I found SH3 Commander and started using that to launch the game.

I noticed that Steam DID NOT start and the game loaded fine.

Sometimes I would try to start the game with SH3 Commander and nothing would happen. I open up the task manager and can see SH3 is running but nothing is on the screen..

I would close the SH3 application, restart SH3 Commander and to re-launch SH3 and the game would start up without issues.

When the game started using SH3 Commander I realized the STEAM did not start.
So I got the thinking to myself, "Self, if SH3 Commander can launch the STEAM installed version of the game WITHOUT loading steam then maybe I can get it to launch my old DVD version of the game as well."

I broke out the old DVD version of the game, did the install, lowered the resolution of my desktop to 1024 x 768 but when I tried to start it I got

"Error - This application can be launched with a release version of Microsoft Windows 95/OSR2.1/98/ME/NT 4.0/2000/XP/Server 2003 only."

I ignored the error closed the application and returned my desktop resolution back to 1920 x 1080.

At this point the old DVD version of the game had not started.

I went back to the post mentioned at the top this message and did everything required for the widescreen setup.

Then I installed Grey Wolves Gold.

Next , SH3 Commander and used that to launch the game.

It worked,, my old box version DVD with the 1.4b patch now worked in widescreen, no errors at all.

As an experiment I tried launching the game with the SH3 Grey Wolves icon on my desktop , NOT SH3 Commander ,, and again, the game started.

So here is my new take.

If you have an old DVD version of the game,

Make sure your desktop resolution is 1920 x 1080

Install it, patch it to 1.4b. Don't even bother to try and start it.

Use the instructions in post 157 of this thread , https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/sho...232178&page=11

Install Grey Wolves Gold

The game should start.

SH3 Commander in not required but it is cool.

If you want to use SH3 Commander you can find it here.

You're on Windows 10 I presume.

In that statement I don't agree. We have here on SubSim a huge bank of various information concerning Silent Hunter.
