Going down?

Given the seemingly lackadaisical attitude a lot of multiplayer players have, was there ever any intention or consideration of simulating the taking on of water and sinking below crash depth before drowning / screen fading to black etc... as opposed to snapping to a game over score card?

I think it would add tension, fear, and increase the public’s appreciation and respect for all submariners.

I thought about this myself, and a few players with me all agreed it would be cool to get some terrible creaking sound right before lights out.

The problem is that the implosion which results when the submarine does fail critically happens pretty much instantly, so it's actually an accurate representation to have the lights suddenly go black (if not the drama I was looking for).

I still say they throw in dramatic loud groans so we have a moment of panic first. :D

That is actually true, I wasn't thinking about it...

I was all "yeeeeah let's do it nasty and people shouting" then I read your answer and it actually makes a lot of sense :salute:

What about getting water in? Right now there is only some wet effect on the sub floor, am I right?

Water is seeping in when you get deeper than 150m or so. Gotta watch the bilge level then. It's mildly disturbing with the groaning and creeking. But nothing very dramatic.

Popping bolts like in Das Boot at the onset of crushdepth might help for dramatic effect. Eventually proper making water by spray from damaged pipes and pressure hull punctures should become visible. Or are the bilge tanks usually that deep that you won't notice that directly. I don't know, I haven't visited a type 7 yet.

We got sunk from shells from a Flower this afternoon and it instantly went to the game over screen.

I think water pouring in, filling up the rooms, screaming, and extreme pitch angles would not be 'hollywood' in this situation, but appropriate and quite dramatic and scary.

Then darkness except for lights until they fail, hearing muffled sound from underwater then game over screen, or drowning noises then screen.

That would certainly entice people to stop messing about and diving with hatch open or sitting on the surface trying to duke deck guns with a destroyer.
