Reducing Renown Costs for U-Boats

I would like to find a way to reduce the initial renown costs for obtaining U-boats. I think it's a bit gamey to have to start off a campaign game with, say, a IXB then gather up enough renown to get a IXC. Many a U-boat commander got command of a new sub without have sailed in a dozen patrols in order to get one of the latest models.

Since I lost the use of SH3 Cmdr in the great Widows 7 crapper (see threads on both SH3 forums) I can no longer choose what boat I can start off with. (I know their are fixes offered but all of them require a computer skill level that exceed mine - except the one where you change the .exe name and forgo SH3 Cmdr).

I tried someone's guide to increasing the amount of renown a skipper starts with but his guide and what I see on the screen when I attempted it differ.

So if someone can point out where that info is in the program, I would be very grateful indeed.

search for the basic.cfg file inside the data folder and open that file with a text editor.
