Those decks are a mess too. Texas has no prisoners that could holystone those decks? :D

em2nought 06-13-17 12:04 PM

I bet you could ask the Islamic convicts in our jails if they wanted to do some holystoning and you could have all the volunteers you could ask for. :03:

They were replacing the main deck last time I was there. They had it replaced back to the 1st rear turret from the bow, but it is a constant process.

Texas actually passed a bill in '93 to give something like 95% of the tax revenue from sporting events to the Parks system, but since then that money has constantly been taken from the parks and redistributed elsewhere.

The over $350 million for the 2017 fiscal year would be enough to be pay for the $100 million dollar budget of the park system, $50 million to completely fix the Texas, and still have $200 million left over for whatever needs funding that can be stolen for other projects it was never allocated for.

It's just far easier to do nothing, and continue business as usual for the politicians. I mean, when you can by pass every legitamit concern with: "Well, it's because those Millennials are ruining (Insert Talking Point). If they weren't out there (insert talking point that contradicts the first amendment) we wouldn't have these problems. The problem is they got (insert something given to Millennials by their Baby Boomer parents that they actually don't give two ****s about), and they want everything handed to them. If they hadn't gone to College for a worthless degree like (insert degree that demonstrates politician has literally no idea what he's talking about) and become a (doctor, engineer) then they'd be just fine."

I'm pretty sick and tired of these idiots and their party politics. Show me someone who can get stuff done, and has a history that proves they're congruent in their actions and ideology. This idea that a party never compromises with the other has got to go.

I'm pretty sure if you sat down the average American and explained to them that the Park system not only maintains our natural wonders, but also keeps pieces of history like the USS Texas in ship shape we could all agree it's worth funding.

The hippies and the historians all get what they want.

You guys need someone like Oliver Wendel Holmes to write you a stirring poem:

That's what it took to save the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) from a similar fate.

Quote:

Aye tear her tattered ensign down
Long has it waved on high,
And many an eye has danced to see
That banner in the sky;
Beneath it rung the battle shout,
And burst the cannon's roar;—
The meteor of the ocean air
Shall sweep the clouds no more.

Her deck, once red with heroes' blood,
Where knelt the vanquished foe,
When winds were hurrying o'er the flood,
And waves were white below,
No more shall feel the victor's tread,
Or know the conquered knee;—
The harpies of the shore shall pluck
The eagle of the sea!

Oh, better that her shattered hulk
Should sink beneath the wave;
Her thunders shook the mighty deep,
And there should be her grave;
Nail to the mast her holy flag,
Set every threadbare sail,
And give her to the god of storms,
The lightning and the gale!

Now that's a beautiful poem!

That was because poets were the rock stars of that time. Today maybe they need a kickstarter.

Hey guys: more news from the front:

--SNIP-

We received an update from Andy today. Here is what he had to say:

"We started noticing something unusual around lunch on Sunday, by 3pm we had a 3 degree list and by 6pm a 6 degree list, we contacted Julius Taylor and TnT and they started mobilizing, by 10pm we had Taylor Marine and TnT onsite working to pump and find the issue/s, TnT divers were in the water by 1:30am, and we had our first patch on by 5am but no resolution of the overall problems. Throughout the day on Monday we continued to gain a list peaking at 8 degrees while we continued to scour the ship for water, continued to pump the blisters and a few internal compartments, and put on more patches. As of now, we have put on 13 patches and are now at a little less than 5 degrees – all of this in about 36 hours . . ."

This evening he added that the ship has improved her list to 2.2 degrees as of 5pm. The contractor believes they are putting on the last patch for now. They anticipate she will be at her normal attitude and draft by tomorrow morning. No word yet on when the ship will reopen.

We will continue to update as more news becomes available.

Well one is used to not taking all literally here, so :haha:

Gonna take a lotta money to fix her. I think August's idea of the cofferdam and fill might be the best most cost effective solution.

I guess counter flooding is not an optimum solution? :D

Battleship Texas will leave San Jacinto Battleground for undetermined location

It is unclear where the battleship will go. Bramlett declined to speculate, but said the ship would go to a site that Houstonians could visit fairly easily. He said the foundation has some potential locations in mind and intends to move quickly.

“If it stays there, it's going to die there,” Bramlett said of the current site. “It just doesn't work financially. It hasn't worked in years.”

The decision to move the battleship follows action by state legislators aimed at saving it. SB 1511, which awaits Gov. Greg Abbott’s signature, will provide the battleship with a new caretaker, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and send it to Alabama temporarily for repairs. The vessel has continued to rust despite sporadic repair efforts spanning decades, and many believe it will sink unless it is moved to a dry berth.

Love the old battleships, I hope they restore her, the only thing missing from the Battleship Texas is a set of bull horns on the front! :up:

Jimbuna 05-30-19 08:28 AM

Yeah, The Grey Wolves 'borrowed' them when we visited her in 2008.

I hope the old girl is moved somewhere that will ensure her long term survival.

So she's not rejoining the fleet to test new big gun technology now? :D

They should remove the expensive hole in the water into which money is poured element by giving her the Mikasa treatment.

If they place her on the southern boarder she's sure to get plenty of visitors. :hmmm:
