IIRC Arc, the A-10 might be able to fly fine with part of the tail gone like that, I believe it was designed so that if one tail section went you could fly the plane on the other. Likewise the electronic control system has a manual backup. It's designed to go through the wringer and come out again. Not sure how that applies to DCS...bloody well wish I could find out though... :hmmm:

Yes, the A-10 has a very solid manual reversion system, iirc you can actually even fly it just by cables. I recall reading a story from the Gulf War where an A-10 successfully returned to base, after 1 hour flight, with the hydraulic system shot up and half a wing missing.

Well, yes, considering the fact the plane flew on after my ejection, it's safe to say it wasn't all that bothered overall.
And yeah, hydraulic assisted control surfaces. 1 system for the left and one for the right iirc, with the possibility to control the plane using the electric trim motors, though that really doesn't give the control needed for a landing. Just couldn't control the thing: needed heavy rudder to get it straight, so much so that the aircraft became terribly unstable. Prolly my lack of flying experience, but definetly wouldn't have landed it in one piece... so I opted for the high Gs of the ejection seat rather than from an impact with terra firma. (flying on half a wing is a lot easier than half a tail, can tell you that much) |
Just had a quick go on IL2, managed to make a successful landing with one wheel, a fuel leak and jammed rudder controls, pretty impressed I didn't turn into a fireball.

You know what they say Lord_Magerius, any landing you can walk away from is a good one. Heres a new screeny from me while I'm checking out the Battle over Britian Redux campaign from Mission 4 Today. (Unedited)

Exposing your full profile is prooobably not so good idea when under fire. :O:

It was that or getting ripped to pieces by a 109's cannons. :DL

A nice little flight from Coltishall to some naval airfield in Holland (I think), where I discovered the runway was not B-17 length and overrun it...but no damage caused, except for a bit to the cowl flaps which was fixed easily enough in the hangar. Engines 3 and 4 are acting up a little though, 3 in particular seems to run hot...have to keep an eye on them.
