IL-2 custom missions
 
I think we should have sticky where subsim IL-2 players can post links to scenarios they make.

I am finishing off a replica of the raid on Scharnhorst near Trondheim using the Norway map. A few things are different in that SBDs are used instead of Skuas and the Tirpitz is the battle ship to sink.

I think it will be tough to do.

Yeh, an sticky for the user made missions would be great. I've been thinking of starting making a string of historical missions for months now. Did some research today and I have my first mission planned. :up:

Well my Trondheim mission is an approzimation given wrong part of map and some aircraft not being available. I do get 15 SBDs in the air but by the time I get over target at least 3 have crashed due to crappy AI formation skills. I really can't figure that one out. Also Scharnhorst (tirpitz) doesn't get sunk. Much like the original.

the AI is a pain to make them fly right.
but from what I've learned tight formations mostly will result into mid air crashes unless you put the squadrons on different altitudes and type of formations.
also keep in mind the Map (area) itself it contains high mountains be aware do not make the AI fly near it as they mostly will bloody mess it up by crashing into it.

as the SBD3 is a US dive bomber.
make a line formation a single row of squadrons that fly towards to the tirpitz
important notes :

dont place them to close after each other.
put them on different altitude like Squad 1 : 1200 meters squad2: 1250 meters behind squad 1.
make sure the altitude sticks between 1000 and 1500 meters in order to make the ground attack (dive sequence) work.
put ground attack icon (waypoints screen) ontop of the tirpitz now still as the icon is FIXED upon the tirpitz it still might result in misses of some bombs falling just near it. just to reconstruct accurary like real.

the Tirpitz or any other battleship Damage model is a simple Hitpoints
aka just drop enough bombs on it and it will sink eventually.
best choice for the SBD 3's to have are 1000 lb bombs I think a total of 4 or maybe 5 hits will do enough.

I am using 500lb bombsas that is waht FAA Skuas had. I'll try that trick with the AI too.

So far the mission is historically accurate as most of teh flight gets show down.

500 LB bombs damage the ship as well
you only need more hits for it to sink ;)
