Truk empty?

I've been visiting the ports in "Truk" every few months in 1942. so far, they have been entirely devoid of ships!

hell, I believe the Yamato itself was supposed to be harbored there as of August.

anyone know if the game ever moves significant fleets there like it should, historically?

It depends on which version of SH4 you are running.

1.5 with GFO

Not in GFO. Webster did use Carotio's modified Truk Atoll mod (quite a difficult undertaking), which has deepened channels and reefs, but no added traffic. FotRSU (which also has Carotio's mod) will most likely have some of the "parked" vessels before too long, maybe this next version. There was already traffic routed through from the original FotRS mod. Other mods have some traffic also, such as TMO with traffic routed through, and RSRDC has some of the "parked" ships at times, as well as modified TMO routing through.

One of the reasons for Truk being empty is the difficulty with routing traffic in and out of the atoll in stock trim, and not having really bad traffic jams, with ships running into each other and the islands, resulting in a burning inferno in the whole area. Ships in SH4 do not like water that is less than about twice a ship's listed draft figure, so BB generally want 50-70 ft of water to travel in, else their "collision avoidance" AI kicks in, and all kinds of mayhem occurs. That water depth is just not there at Truk in most places.

thanks, very informative. Also tried Kure (that was a fun trek) but no joy. I assume the Yamato is out there... somewhere.

been watching the development of FOTR with interest. will be trying it out next time I do a campaign.

ships running into each other and the islands,
funniest thing happened to me yesterday.

I was shadowing a convoy on the way out of a long harbor entrance. It had a 5 destroyer escort; 1 back, 2 sides, 2 front.

the side escorts often swung out wide and did a spin, then back towards the convoy.

on one wide swing, they both ran into the edges of the harbor mouth (land), and then stopped... but right after, backed up in a line at max speed for 5k and ran into me (wasn't paying attention), and each other. we all ended up in a heap. LOL.

reload time. this time I put the brakes on, but they still ran into each other.

I've got a video here somewhere of Truk, with me doing an early look-see after someone (mark bonamer??) found the place burning (v0.56??), with ships piled on top of each other, some even mangled into two other ships. Besides ships spawning into other ships causing issues, it's when they back up for collision avoidance that the comedy really kicks into high gear... They apparently do not issue backup mirrors for any of the ships in SH4, and they also apparently do not have damage zones while in reverse. :timeout: The ships will back halfway into docks (after turning the wrong way), and not have any fires or explosions, but as soon as they move forward, then the smoke, fire and explosions start! Someone else found issues at Mikado, up the coast from Tokyo (Yokosuka) Bay, where there wasn't a single floating vessel in the bay (v0.62??), only burning wrecks... that was from an early attempt at splitting the Jap_HarborTraffic file for FotRSU - didn't work so well. - Osaka Bay used to be another comedy show. Might be still, but last I checked, we had deleted the "clowns"... :salute:

I always enjoyed a foray into Truk with TMO and RSRD.

Commenting on a dead thread here but thought I'd mention for any who pass by that while I can't tell you dates or anything, I can confirm Yamato occasionally docks in Kure. I did come across her there once. 1.5 with GFO and some playable surface ships is all I'm using.
