Smoke screens .

Will you please think about having a chance of random smoke screens .

What would be the point?

You mean that escorts fire smoke along the side of the convoy to hide long range shots?

Or is it something else completely different?

Ok so it was a defensive option when under direct and established attack right? It sounded from the video it had more to do with an already underway naval destroyers and aircraft engagement than a surprise uboat attack.

You wouldn’t waste fish if they knew you were there to the point they laid down smoke and you’d ideally have already attacked before they knew you were there.

So in a live, real time co-op session, I’m not sure this wouldn’t just be a massive time delay... unless I’m missing something?

Interesting video though, thanks. I’m also unaware of any sub sim replicating this...

This is Wolfpack and convoys can be large, if the first sub attacked, the second or third sub may be frustraded. :o:haha:
...i would also like it for immersion reasons, depends on how it would look like.

ok, and I'm not arguing against it, I'm just failing to see the gameplay mechanic in this other than:

a) it might 'look cool'
b) it may be historical (although I doubt it was ever used much on regular convoys against uboats)

so if it's only a and b, then as a **gameplay mechanic**, it doesn't really lead anywhere...

e.g. if you're in the 2nd boat and the 1st boat scares the convoy (as has happened to me more than once) then all your measurements are blown and the 90+ mins you've spent getting a good solution is blown because the jack*** in the first boat gave away his position.

That 'sounds' fun and immersive, but when you've experienced it more than once, it's just boring and frustrating.

So the question always has to be 'where's the fun? what's the challenge to overcome? what's the risk/reward cycle'? and how to turn those into gameplay dynamic mechanisms.

I'm all for more challenge and depth; give us proper trim tanks and damage models, and RANDOM stuff happening, and broken systems on the boat we can repair using skill and not just a click or a 'wrench' tool etc... but there are players that just want to rack up 200k+ tonnage with one shot kills...

it's going to be hard to please both.

But as for the OP's suggestion, I'm all for giving the game more teeth and making things more challenging and requiring more brains than brawn, but would smoke really do that?

Re Smoke Screens would only be used by the escorts they would place themselves between the Convoy and the approaching enemy surface Fleet or warship group to lay down a smoke screen to throw off the range finders of the enemys guns.
Enveloping the Convoy in a smoke screen would be a home goal each merchant has its own position within the Convoy Box so to speak it keeps that position by plotting its position in relation to the ships to port and starboard in front and astern if your surounded by thick black smoke how do you keep your position the bow of a 12k-15k large merchants going to slice your 2800ton tramp steamer in half for sure.

In the early stages of World War II the old pre World War One Coal tramp steamers spewing out thick black smoke could be seen 10-16 miles away
by other Uboats or 20-30 miles away by Long range German Fokkerwolf 290 search planes.

Convoy HG-45 sails from Gibraltar on 9 October 1940 arrives Liverpool 27th October chugging along at 5-6 knots thats the best speed the tramp steamers can manage and after 3-4 days your picked up by German Aircraft then every Uboat within 50-100 miles vectored into your northerly course with German aircraft constantly updating Onkel Karl Bdu
the Germans Called it the Happy Time the Atlantic Turkey Shoot .
this convoy made it to Liverpool with no losses but other Convoys were not as lucky autumn 1940 - spring 1941 the German Held all the aces.

Atm the game is the same everytime . Find ships then submerge and sink ships . At least with a random smoke screen (rarely) there is a chance you would have to wait , surface and reposition for attack .

The game isn't even 1/5th finished.

If you want to add an extra 40+ mins to your game just for variety, you could always just spook them yourself! :) :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

...'cause that's all the gameplay elements smoke would bring. :Kaleun_Cheers:

However, if you've seen their roadmap and Neals recent post, the first REAL mission is now being worked on, that will bring lots of challenges and lots of things to have to think about.

Also, this game isn't released. These amazing devs (only 2 of them + Neal) are doing miracles making this, but it's going to be slow going - gave dev is very, very hard. Wolfpack is in (very) early access... saying there's not much content is kinda stating the obvious... there's not much content - because they're still making it.

With the amazing work (and best sub game) they've done already, I can't wait to see what's coming, but if it ever feels like it's getting repetitive, I put it down for a week or two... this is a marathon, not a sprint. As sub sim fans, that should be a given lol.

tdlr... harbour missions next!!!! SO excited!!! :Kaleun_Salute:

Do you play with others or do you just play solo? maybe some more variety would be playing with others or working as a Wolfpack until more content comes?

Have you looked at Wolfpack BdU? There’s lots there that will keep you from being bored! Take a look at the general / how to sections... we’ve got Cel Nav! :)

very easy to explain, i wonder if you cant see it (must be the smoke or ?)

:k_confused:

- smoke could be layed from an DD on an outside ring position (outside security), depends on situation and weather maybe.

- uboats have to plan a new attack maybe partly without sight on the merchants, where are they going to ?
- while trying to find this, the uboat may come closer to the smoke screen and may got supprised as a huge bow wake slice through the smoke directly infront of it, relative close allready...

...changing sight conditions and this also just partly is a huge gameplay element, same for changing weather or an escort comming out of an rainfront for example.

i just wonder if it would be historical correct against Uboats in a convoy battle but think this is a good idea which have to be researched.

...this forum is good for ideas, an important element !
