In a remote forest, a few kilometres from the Chernobyl power plant, the huge Duga-2 radar tower stands as relic of Soviet mismanagement.

His name was Popov. Dusko Popov. As a Serbian double agent during the Second World War, Popov was an expert gambler, known womaniser and even crossed paths with James Bond's creator Ian Fleming.

But was he really the inspiration behind 007? And did he have the information that could have prevented the Pearl Harbor attacks, if only he had been believed?

On a September night in 1983, Soviet lieutenant colonel Stanislav Petrov stood guard at a satellite-based missile launch detection system. When the alarm went off, announcing that the US had attacked, Petrov had thirty minutes to decide whether the launch was real or false.

Also another name to throw into the mix is Vasily Arkhipov who stopped his Captain launching a nuclear torpedo at the US fleet during the Cuban crisis in 1962

I think Popov was one of two people who where the inspiration for Ian Fleming's character James Bond. The other is possibly Edward "Eddie" Chapman a criminal who was recruited by the Abwehr while imprisoned in Jersey. He was also the only British citizen to have been awarded the Iron Cross.
