[SOLVED] Hard time hitting targets with KiUB

Just to say, I am complete trash at manual targeting, but it seems like I am having a harder time with KiUB mod (Currently using Operation Monsun + OMEGU + Fifi's Compilation).

Despite all my attempts, it seems like I always end up overshooting or missing the target ship completely. I have also noticed that KiUB doesn't keep the lock in 90% of cases, it stays on target for let's say 5 seconds and then unlocks, having me to re-locate the scope and starting the measurement I couldn't complete.

Is there a quick n simple guide (I already have the PDF) for KiUB and overall manual targeting?

Thanks in advance and happy hunting!

First of all, at what distance you fire torpedoes?

Then it seems i don’t have this locking problem you have...but have to say, in 99% of times i never lock any target (in RL they couldn’t lock anything with periscope)
Keep in mind when target is too far away, you can lock it but not for long! You have to wait target is closer so the locking stay locked!

To summarize, the first important value for a torp solution is SPEED.
You can use the U-Jagd (i very rarely miss a speed value with it) or the AOBF ring when the ship is identified and you have his length.
To use the AOBF you’ll have to read Lurker documentation, it’s not that difficult to learn the use.
Then second important value is AOB. I think you can calculate it with the AOBF, but I’ve never did it...i always estimate by visual. As i try to get in most cases a 90° angle, i wait for the target to be almost at my 80° before i enter the right value.
Even easier if you are at 90° Of target path, you set a 90 AOB when your periscope bearing is at zero, and you move the periscope till you find your target...it will give you the AOB!
Third value is DISTANCE, but it’s not really important (except for very long shots)
Sometimes i even never enter any distance value. Distance value is important for estimated impact...

All in all, i almost never miss anything (except with duds) as far as the SPEED value is correct :yep:
Remember you have to be no more than 2 knots (best is 0) to calculate target speed! (Even with U-Jagd)

... and if the seas are rough, you might have to plane up a couple of feet to get your periscope above the waves. You'll need to use the keyboard short-cuts for that. It also potentially (probably) will expose your turm in the wave troughs... if it's too rough, you might have to break-off the attack ("Never!"). :salute:

First of all, thank you both for your quick answers :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:
Second of all, I wanted to give props to Fifi for his awesome tweaks on OM!

Third of all

Usually I take position no more than 2500m from my target on a 90ish angle if I have to catch up with a running convoy.
And you are right, it seems like my speed (4-5 knots duh) is unlocking my scope, which seems more than legit. This might also be a reason for my incorrect calculation, hence I never worried too much about slowing my sub after a Full Stop order. Big mistake apparently.
I have tested this with the torpedo training mission (stationary cargo) and yes, my excessive acceleration caused an overshoot or even a dud.

This too. I was stalking a merchant in the Channel with very rough seas, which caused some of my torpedoes to go deeper or to malfunction in every way possibile (it's 1939 after all).
Some other ways I had to break the attack as well, because those pesky destroyers have eagle eyes

Thank you both once again for the good tips, it's getting much clearer now!

2500m....that’s long shots...
During all the Happy Years (first years of war) i always shoot cargos from...800m!
In SH3/SH5 also :yep:
Even convoys, i always try to infiltrate the defense and many times i find myself between 2 convoy row...shooting at 500m or even less! (I think the torp can activate around 300m in OM)
At this distance it’s almost impossible to miss...and often i hit from bow tubes and stern tube (when in between rows)
But it’s dangerous too, I’ve been rammed by cargo i didn’t saw coming, once they disband after the first hit … you have to get eyes everywhere !
Only after the first years, when escorts gets tougher and infiltration impossible, I shoot from extreme external defense. But it’s still less than 2500m…

In OM even the first years, convoy infiltration is almost impossible if calm sea.
Unless escorts are all novice. But the more the sea is rough, the more chances you will have to remain undetected :yep:
I’ve been following convoys for days from far away in the waiting of better weather conditions for successful attack … preying for bad weather to come :haha:

That makes two of us then lol

Anyways, thanks for the heads up on optimal distance, that's another thing to account for :Kaleun_Cheers:

Coming from WW1 planes simulation, as we said at this time: when you think you are close enough to open fire, keep closing! :)

well my avarage range when firing is 2000m. The torps almost always reach target. What happens then is, can be some what dissapointing. i.e duds and running to deep.
Almost all shots are taken 80-90°, and my speed is no higher than 2knts
