[REL] Crew Rank Fix

This mod increases the number of Officers, Chief Petty Officers, and Petty Officers you can have on your sub. So you can now have a crew layout more historically accurate than before.

The reason for creating this mod is that the game defaults for all ranks is set lower than the actual number used, especially during the war. And even worse, the game treats CPOs as Officers, when in fact they were Enlisted personnel, which further reduces the number you can have of each. While the game will start your career with more than the allowed number of each rank, you can't swap men out or increase the number of certain ranks to an historically accurate level without running into the "Too Many..." error message.

The number of POs was increased because after looking at several sites with crew lists on them, it appears that only a few out of an entire sub's complement had an ordinary Seaman's rank. In reality, any sailor who had any sort of specialization rating had at least a PO Third Class rank as well.

There are three versions of this mod:

Crew Rank Fix - Stock - Use with the stock 1.5 game.

Crew Rank Fix - RSRDC - Use with the standalone Run Silent, Run Deep the Campaign mod.

Crew Rank Fix - With Narwhal Mod - Use with the Subsim.com Narwhal mod. Install AFTER the Narwhal mod.

Install using JSGME, or extract the "Data" folder inside the archive into your SH4 installation, clicking "Yes" when it asks if you want to overwrite any folders and files.

There're no Real Fleet Boat or Trigger Maru-Overhauled versions because they already have the same type of changes in them, though their numbers are different.

The numbers for each class are as follows:

Gar Class
MaxPettyOfficers=47
MaxOfficers=13

Gato & Balao Class
MaxPettyOfficers=59
MaxOfficers=21

Narwhal Class
MaxPettyOfficers=70
MaxOfficers=19

Porpoise Class
MaxPettyOfficers=43
MaxOfficers=11

S Class
MaxPettyOfficers=34
MaxOfficers=9

Salmon & Sargo Class
MaxPettyOfficers=48
MaxOfficers=11

Tambor Class
MaxPettyOfficers=47
MaxOfficers=13

Tench Class
MaxPettyOfficers=60
MaxOfficers=21

Be sure to read the readme.txt for more information.

Beeeyouteeful! :/\\k: This is something I have always rooted for. The other reality is that even a Seaman 1st or 2nd is working toward one of those ratings. There are no "generic" sailors.

I've been wanting to fix the Officers and CPOs. The numbers the stock game gives you just aren't right. Doing a search here showed me how to fix it, and as pointed out earlier, research on the correct numbers led me to increase the POs too.

I'm really surprised no one had done this for the 1.5 game, if not earlier.

Fred, will this work with TMO? I think Ducimus made several changes to the UPC files that might conflict but I'm away from my game computer and can't load it up to test.

Thanks in advance!

As noted in the first post:

"There're no Real Fleet Boat or Trigger Maru-Overhauled versions because they already have the same type of changes in them, though their numbers are different."

In most cases their numbers of Officers and POs are less than what I use, but still more than the stock game allows.

If you prefer my numbers (which BTW, are given for each sub class in the included readme file. I may go back and put them in the first post) I would recommend trying the RSRDC version as the rest of the sub info in it may more closely match what's in TMO and RFB.

Jeez - sorry, Fred. I don't know how I missed that the first time. Thanks for the info and the research.

I thank you for this very much, but I've got a question. First off, the readme states:

"The mod simply adds the following two lines to each sub class's .upc file:

MaxPettyOfficers=X ; max number of crewmembers over rank 4
MaxOfficers=X ; max number of crewmembers over rank 7"

I'm using TMO, so altering those lines in the appropriate upc file is all that is needed to increase/decrease the POs and CPOs for each sub? Or is there something else that must be changed? For instance, you made this mod compatible for RSRDC, did you have to change anything else for your mod to function correctly in RSRDC?

Yes. And the lines are already in TMO, so you can just change the numbers there if you want. And remember, the game treats CPOs as officers. So if you want more of them, you have to increase the MaxOfficers= number.

Nope. Just that.

Okay! I'll give it a try! Thanks again!

Nice one Fred, you are kinder to me than I was but your research and reasoning are sound. Thanks!

Happy Hunting!

Yeah I know this is a long dead thread but I was wondering if the creator of the mod would be willing to make this compatible with TMO+RSRDC?

HertogJan 02-12-14 04:00 PM

This is from his readme:

I haven't tried it or messed with it myself but can't you simply change the X values to the ones you want?

I didn't create a TMO version because it already changes the crew. While the numbers aren't the same, they're pretty close. If you want my numbers, you can try the RSRDC version, though that might change some other settings from TMO. Or you can do as HertogJan suggested, and just change the values in TMO. I give the numbers for each class in the readme, and you can see which file for each class to edit by looking in the mod.
