Novice stupidity...

I did try to play Dangerous waters, ... but a bit hard.
Now trying to play 688(i). I asked a question about how to plot a course, but no one answered. Therefore I will ask it here because on this place are many more readers!

This was my question:

I want to play 688(I) / single missions / Rebel Yell. My order is now to sail to the sea of Okhotsk.

On the map I see my boat, but not exactly where I am. I don't see names anywhere and I can't find how to sail to the sea of Okhotsk because I can't zoom out either.
How to plot my course?

A little help for a novice?

By the way:
If I start Dangerous Waters, then I also see no possibility to plot a course.....

I understand that I don't understand something well... :D

Right-click and go to Navigation, the tutorial shows it clearly anyway.

There is a 53 megabyte manual in the Manual folder of your DW installation. Surely how to do that can be found there! ;)

I guess, he has sailed the wrong heading anyway never to be seen again! :Kaleun_Binocular:

What is the correct procedure?

What is the correct procedure?

I have classified a contact as the destroyer Spruance.
Since the Dangerous Waters USNI-Reference book tell us nothing about the ranges of Spruance sonars, where do i look
to get that basic sonar range information?

a) Internet?
b) Somewhere else in Dangerous Water?
c) Other sources?

You should start from reading manual: Section 5 Training 5-6 Underwater Sound Propagation. Of course you can search internet for wider explanation of problem but simplest explanation is inside game folder, writed as pdf file.
The truth is: range of of detection of any sonar in game is NOT constant.

I don't understand why so many players wanna waste time by asking on forums (where you have to wait for answer and replies arent always correct) instead reading interesting sections in game manual.

Btw Range of Spruance sonars is TOP SECRET information :)

Now i understand DW gives no answers here. So the Internet or other sources are your friends.

Spruance max range (Top secret or not) of its best installed towed array (AN/SQR-19B(V) TACTAS towed array) is normaly listed at 70nm / hull sonar 40nm.
Because my actual range from Spruance is 14nm i should be very concerned about my safety.
Now the theme "Underwater Sound Propagation" (positioning, sea state, speed, depth etc.) comes into play whether my sub, 14nm away, is traceable or not for the Spruance.

DW community can give you answers but first, you should learn something about asking good questions. Your question only proved you didn't read manual.

I would also recommend watching a few of these

You could have also just looked at your setup for your keyboard in the game.
Look at map section, it shows what keys that are set to perform functions.

For mine, on Map screen, I click on my boat, hold left mouse button and hit R button, and draw line to contact etc... Giver me range

or just hit the insert key :k_confused:

I am re-reading this thread after a while.

There is little point to get range or other capability information from the internet or other sources. You are playing a game for which the developers made up their own model. It has their values put in to provide a gameplay experience whatever they felt appropriate to make.

Then the internet, or whatever public written source, cannot be relied on to keep you safe in the game. The information you are looking for is mostly secret anyway. If something is written then it is wrong, or simply not the same as reality. Because lives depend on it being not known to the enemy.

If you really want to know, try it out in the editor. Put down an enemy ship or sub. Place down your own playable platform. Go test it out in different conditions. As there is no hard rule on distance or speed when you get detected or detect others. It is variable. Then you find the facts from the game. The only ones that matter to your succes. You play in a virtual world, so you need the virtual facts. Not the real facts in this case.

In other way of playing, just try it out to carefully approach in the mission you are doing now (or back then). With the save/load option close at hand. Trial and error, respawn when you died because of the wrong choice. Be more careful every next time.
