Captain Midnights Radio Mod for SH4

I know this has come up before, but does anyone have a valid copy of Captain Midnight's Radio mod for Silent HUnter 4? I used to own it and loved it. Ive tried downloading it from this site (Subsim Radio Room) and Winzip says it "does not appear to be a valid archive"

I know the game is very old. But I repurchased it off Steam last night and am having a blast. I miss the radio.

what version of SH4 did you purchase from Steam?

The file I found through a quick search is a .rar, not a .zip. You should use Winrar to decompress it.

Or even better, because it can handle most types of compressed files, 7zip.

I bought the base game then the uboat missions add-on pack. I did not have options otherwise and I assume it was all up to date on updates because steam generally auto-updates everything.

Is there a version issue that Steam is not addressing?

I finally found it! However, it causes my game to crash. Its as if when it does teh radio news flash for "events" it just crashes.

I had to uninstall it and the game then worked.

That sounds like there's a listing in the playlist that does not have a sound file.

I think there's a radio station manager utility somewhere that might help track it down. Otherwise, it's a matter of slogging through the list and files to find the issue. If it crashes at a specific date/time, you should be able to find that entry to make it easier.

If I am remembering correctly, it is actually an out-of-sequence event, bad date/time as compared to the preceding radio event. The mod is really cool otherwise, and it is definitely easy to see how something like that could creep into the work. Most other aspects of the game skip over the "bad" data, but NOT the radio - it is not forgiving at all, and does indeed cause a CTD.

Use Digital_Trucker's RSM RadioStationManager mod, which can of itself be a bit fiddly, so pay attention to his instructions, and remember that the "modern" Windows does NOT like a lot of WinXP stuff... You might have troubles with the exe file versus Windows Defender and other AV stuff... The SubSim link there works, but the DownUnder does not. There is further information throughout that 9-page thread that might be found helpful.

Thanks for this. The Captain Midnight mod is very confusing because there are 4 different versions out there, some with slightly different titles, and some were uploaded to this site with the notation "1 of 4, 2 of 4..." but 3 and 4 do not exist. Im not sure if I download all the stuff or if one file contains all the others.

I downloaded the radio manager -- it seems to suggest that it will autromatically but then Im reading we do it manually?Oy...Im just new to this after 15 years. I get that its an old game so I need to do some work. But its hard to absorb all this at once.

I was a founding member of the Realism Patch Group (RPG) for Falcon 4.0 in the late 1990s. I remember we had a huge mod that required people to do crazy things to get it installed, so I get it.

Yes, just applying a single mod in SH4 is fraught with all sorts of issues, especially if you do not install the game in a folder of your own making, since the "modern" Windows OS is so protective of the System folders such as Program Files... But anyway, s7rikeback has a small collection of Silent Hunter mods, and this is his Captain Midnight files folder:

Captain Midnight folder

Inside should be "Captain Midnight's CBS Radio Station for SH4" mod (one of the four, but I don't remember which), and the "Captain Midnight's CBS News Sound Mod Fix", which might be all that you need... install the Station mod, then the Fix mod, and you might be good to go... :salute:
