My first released mission - 80% done

Svalbard Mission - Operation Brimstone (0.8)

This is my first ever attempt at a 'released' mission.

It's 25 August, 1975. You're the Captain of the USS Archerfish (SSN 678) and you've just dropped off a sick crewmember at the Norwegian port of Longyearbyen.

It offers 4 different triggered 'missions', overt ASW, covert ASW, overt ASuW and covert ASuW. So the mission won't be the 'same' every time you play it.

It's about 80% complete - the 'Goals Complete / Mission End' is still not working the way I want it to and I want to add some 'secondary mission' goals.

I just wanted to see if this 'style' of mission is what people are interested in and I'll work on more.

You'll receive your orders 40 minutes into the mission. Your first task, though, is to navigate the Isfjorden and get out to the Greenland Sea!

Anyway, give it a go and see if you like it. I've tried hard to give it an 'authentic' feel, using (fairly) accurate radio messages, Soviet ships of that era, contemporary CIA reports (from the FOIA page) from the time period - even real sports scores!

It's in the 'Downloads' section.

Installation - place the mission and sound files into your 'Scenario' folder in DW.

Feedback welcome via the Subsim Forums. :subsim:
Cheers! :ping:

I will wait for complete scenario but it looks very interesting :salute:

Thanks P7, I'm working on it - I'll try and get it finished this weekend.

I'll add a bit more polish to the ships' routes and spacing, too.

Cheers!

I'm about 1 hour into the current version so far running RA 1.48 (patch 2).
The attention to detail is 10/10.
Family grams and sports scores might seem like fluff but they add a lot.
I really like the idea of starting out in-port and having to know how to drive the boat. You might consider adding a marked channel to the Nav map and maybe some marker buoys for eye candy but that's your call. :D

Thanks for the kind feedback, ET, I'll do some research about channels and see what I can find!

From what I've read, there was a clear 'window' for ships navigating the Isfjorden during the year and Barentsburg was the only port deep enough for Soviet resupply.

I've been thinking and I've a got a few more ideas to add in - so I'll try and get those in this weekend.

Thanks again, :Kaleun_Cheers:

Hey fellas,

Just an update - I know I'm now 2 weeks overdue - combination of work being crazy and trying hard to iron out bugs in testing (which is taking a lot longer than I thought!)

It's coming together though - much more detailed than the first 'beta' mission and the addition of a 'secondary' mission now allows for 20 different combinations of mission (if my Maths is right) - so hopefully that'll improve playability.

Thanks for your patience guys - hopefully it'll be done this week. :Kaleun_Cheers:

Any progress?

Stewy1 04-05-20 03:51 PM

G'day Pepe,

Thanks for that - sadly, work got crazy, Christmas holidays, and then the Corona Virus blew up!

I've got a bad habit of completing 80% of a mission, and then 'running out of time/energy' - I've done that twice now (I also started an East Timor mission in a Collins class).

I'm working on an FFG mission, which occurs in the week before the US invasion of Grenada. Hopefully, with the 'lockdown' I can get some work done over Easter ;)

Cheers!

Yeah i've got the same problem so many times. I unfinished dozens (really) of missions. So i recommend focus on not so "climatic" scenarios. I mean making radio messages etc kills my motivations :P

Better is to make at first most important triggers, goals, waypoints, dynamic groups - some kind of skeleton of mission and after that stage add more "immersive" addons like radio messages, familygrams, civilian traffic...

Keep up with good health :salute:

I understand what you mean about planning and putting the 'shell' together! I think a pen and paper and Word document is perhaps equally as important at the DW Mission editor itself! :ping:
