[REL] DR3 Slide Rule

VO101_Tom SlideRule by Tycho

Implementation for Silent Hunter 3!

This is an in-game implementation of the Dreieckrechner DR3 circular slide rule, used by the Luftwaffe for navigation calculations. It is just as suitable for use at sea.
To use it, you will need to know, or study, how to solve navigation problems, especially triangle problems and the Law of Sines, and how to use logarithmic tools. There are a number of tutorials around to help.

The original graphics were made by VO101_Tom.
From the original graphics, I removed the scales for temperature and height, which are only used for IAS – TAS correction and not needed for submarine navigation.

I added a second black ring, which slides out and overlays the degree scale.
This allows you to use the DR3 as a normal circular slide rule, to easily and quickly do various calculations.
The inner black ring always rotates freely. But for the pointer to rotate freely, you must set the TDC to Salvo mode.

This is the kind of tool that was actually used by submariners in 1940’s before the days of hand-held calculators. Try it and learn what it was like!

The mod change the menu_1024_768.ini and Dials.cfg files. Please follow the included directions to make the necessary changes to those files.
By following these directions, you can make the Slide Rule compatible with your personal favorite mods.

Some mods, like MaGUI, already have devices which perform similar functions. If you wish, you can replace one of them with this one.
But that will lose the elegant artwork that MakMan has done. I haven’t even tried to match the quality of his work!
So, use this mod at your own risk!

Special thanks and credits:

Hitman, Makman94, Onelifecrisis, Joegrundman and all other GUI modders.
By studying their mods, I learned how the SH3 GUI works.

To VO101_Tom for the original graphics.

And to BigWalleye, who helped me and prepare the documentation.

Anyone who wishes can use this mod freely, without further permission from me.

If you have any problems installing it, contact me through the SubSim forum, and I'll help you.

Looking good as always!

First, a little history!

I have a real NL-10, Russian aviation slide rule (linear), which I used many years when playing flight simulators.
For me it is fun to do calculations with slide rule. I use NL-10 also for SH3.

A few months ago, accidentally noticed in the net, these Dreieckrechner slide rules.
Luftwaffe navigation!

Then I came across a site, where was DR3 flash version and a printable version.
I downloaded the files for the print version, with the idea, that they may be useful.
And I forgot about them.
But this weekend, when dig in my computer, I saw these files again.
I decided to put this in the game (SH3). On Monday I had a working version.
Then, I searched again for this site, but could not find it.
The site was not in English language, but I do not remember what language was.
But then, I remembered that it was associated with IL-2 Sturmovik.
And with that in hand, google found a site, in English, of the author - VO101_Tom.
I asked and he kindly provided me permission.

If we look at the available variants for SH3, and this DR3:

They do not differ significantly, used the same concept.
Here is needed to thanks to,Onelifecrisis, Joegrundman, Hitman, Makman94 and all other GUI moders!
From their mods, I study how SH3 menu things works.

From the original graphics, I delete the scales for temperature and height, which are for IAS - TAS.
Then I had an idea, to do a second black ring, which stands in place of the degree scale.
Just to have the opportunity to easily and quickly implement simple calculations, for multiplication and division.

The mod look and work like this:

First, I will prepare DIY version. Then, will think about other versions.

An incredible find!

It seems the slide rule has an quick and easy kilometers to nautical miles conversion as well?

Yes, and m/s too.

That's great to hear

What the future users prefer?

The black ring will rotates always.

But for the pointer I have some choices with compromises.

1 - with torpedo depth dial.
Will rotates only if you have loaded torpedo in tube

2 - with bearing dial.
Will rotates always, but you need to switch TDC to OFF.
This also leads to rotation of AOB dial. And when you switch TDC back to ON,
bearing will go to where scope is pointing, but AOB will stay to its new value.
And you need to be always careful about this.

3 - with spread angle dial (my choice).
Will rotates always, but you need to switch the tubes to salvo mode.

Spread angle dial would be my choice.

very nice slide rule , Tycho
i believe that these days back ,all sides were curring many many of every kind slide rules were availiable at their days

ps: something off topic but about slide rules(excuse me for this Tycho,if there is any problem, please, moderators remove my post):
i was looking for long time for templates for two german slide rules but i had no luck at all on searching.
the slide rules were called :
Rundschieber für Auswanderungsverfahren “A”
and
Rundschieber für Auswanderungsverfahren “B”
does anybody have any links or templates for the above slide rules?

Tycho 02-22-15 05:58 PM

I know this link, where have description of the so called Auswanderungsverfahren method, and some drawings for "A" and "B":

The tvre site is astonishing :yeah:
