Dark night, running silent, scope down, 100ft depth = passively detected by escort?

Hi All,

I'm running FotRU and I'm nice and lined up on a task force, aiming for a Heavy Cruiser. . . but unfortunately, there's a destroyer coming up its side and it's going to pass 2-300 yards behind me.

No problem, I think, I'll lower the scope and wait for him to pass. I lower scope, I'm already running silent, all stopped, and it's a very dark night with a bit of fog (though seas are calm). I'm in a Tambor class so I'm at 60 feet. I set depth to 100 feet and wait. . . and right around 300 yards, I'm detected and the whole task force goes nuts.

I'm not complaining, but I'm just wondering by what game mechanic I'm being detected? Just a lucky passive sonar operator that close to me?

Thanks for any advice.

I'm surprised you didn't get detected well before that. Was the destroyer pinging before you got detected? Usually they are in convoy. I figure about 2000-3000 yards is normal for them to pick you up.

i agree with 1Patriot: you should have been detected earlier.

when you find yourself in this situation, take your best shot before the escort reacts to you and then go deep, evade and plan for a subsequent attack.

in a similar situation, but with heavy winds, the escort might pass you without detecting you.

keep at it and good luck!

One thing I've noticed with FOTRSU is that a decent number of Japanese destroyers can detect my SJ radar. In my current game (May 1942), destroyers will sometimes pick it up at about 60% of the range where I pick them up, and then they'll head right for me.

Were you on the surface with your radar on?
