Smoothing jagged edges in default res?

Howdy everyone.

Just getting back into SH3 after a couple years hiatus, and I'm looking for a solution to a problem I'm having and have always had. I'm not looking for a widescreen fix, as I have a pretty wonky monitor resolution (1400x900) that a lot of widescreen fixes dont really cover. So, I'm wondering if there's any way that I can smooth the jagged edges in the native resolution. If anyone can help, much appreciated, thanks.

For starters, don't forget to turn on AA via the shift-pgup key combo.

John,

Could you explain that comment a little further? What does "AA" stand for?

Do you do this during game play? Lastly, what exactly does it do?

Thanks,

David I

AA = Anti-aliasing. One of it's main uses is to smooth out jagged edges and lines.
You can activate it for SH3 at any time during the game; I do it once the actual "gameplay" screen is loaded. I.e., the sub view if you will.

The key combo shift-pgup adds AA to the view; each time you do the key combo adds one step. The combo shift-pgdn reduces AA one step at a time.

Go to the bridge view and look at the uzo while you try the key combos and you'll see how it works.

John,

I'll give it a shot this afternoon (looks over both shoulders) when I get home from work.

I'll let you know how it worked.

I actually did not know this. I've been using forced AA from the Nvidia control panel and that seems to work pretty well. I will try this out, thank you.

I've tested out turning off Nvidia control panel AA and tried in-game AA using Shift+pgup. It did work but it seems to be a really strange form of AA where it just seems to blur the screen more and more in order to smooth out the lines.

Nvidia control panel smooths the jagged edges without the blurring effect, if you have access to control panel, definately use this way rather than in-game.

Definately; a graphic card function will always be better.
Good tip.

John,

I played around with that technique and noticed the same blurring that Sugardust noted. I'm going to play around with it some more, and maybe work up the nerve to try it through my graphics card.

Again, thanks for the tip.

Yeah, if you have the option to the graphic card way does it better.

With NVidia and Windows 10 version 1703 and later A/A doesn´t seem to work with SHIII.

You can try NVInspector and then:

Profiles: SH III

Antialiasing compatibility 0x004412C1 (Diablo III)

Apply changes.
