External Camera- a "poll"

TMI. Yes or no?

EDIT: DAMN this new forum layout, this was supposed to be a poll, and now i can't delete this mistake and start over. BAH.

Ok, so this will have to work without a poll like i wanted.

Do you think the External Camera gives too much info and makes the game alot easier?

Yes or no?

Engel der Vernichtung 06-12-06 05:07 PM

No. In "reality", your ability to physically maneuver around the boat, and in general see things is not merely limited to what you can do in a computer game. Due to that limitation, I'll take the external camera, and use it. I pay the renown hit for it, so I figure I've earned the right to use it.

Ducimus 06-12-06 05:11 PM

Im really ticked off i cant change my orginal post.

To answer my own question,

Yes i do, but the eye candy is damn hard to give up :D

it's the F12 uber scope view that's the key to reducing difficulty with the external view enabled--just edit out the F12 capability and you have best of both worlds--

CCIP 06-12-06 05:16 PM

Yes, but only if you want it to.

I'll admit that it probably took me a year to learn not to cheat with it. The trick is to play for a while with it disabled, and then bring it back in. By that time you'll be so used to playing without the camera that it won't even cross your mind to use it for anything other than some nice screenies to show for the action.

Keelbuster 06-12-06 06:01 PM

Screencaps are necessary. period.

I've come back to playing after few months break. Trouble is I used to play with event disabled. I can't enable camera it's greyed out so can't check. Think i edited something to disable. Can't remember what. Any ideas.

:yep:

I've never played with it on. I dont' really plan to, knowing that I blew it up is good enough for me. i dont' really care if people use it. to each their own.

Seminole 06-13-06 12:43 AM

I use the external camera and feel no need to make apologies for doing so.

I use it for two reasons. First I really like the panoramic scenes it provides and second I hate wasting fuel and time chasing a ship for hours only to find it is a neutral.

P_Funk 06-13-06 01:04 AM

I'll never give up the external camera for one reason: If I can't see my boat and it's prey from a cinematic view every now and then, then I won't be able to "live" Das Boot and isn't that really why we're really playing these games?

CCIP 06-13-06 01:15 AM

I also have to qualify that my best career so far was the one where I had my external camera disabled (that's my Mohr career in WaW I). I spent my screenshot-making time on that one by writing logs instead. :hmm:

snyperAL 06-13-06 01:31 AM

it is a good thing, without it the graphics would almost be unnoticable...

Exactly,

Why have good looking graphics if you cant look at them from time to time.I also use the external camera for taking screenshots and just to look at the graphics as I play.

I can not imagine playing without it, does that mean I have no imagination? :hmm:

Yes. I've used externals occasionally, but most of my patrols are done without externals. They provide too much advantage, especially in regards to destroyer/escort evasion.

Evading without externals is a very rewarding aspect of SH3 for me.

agreed. it gives an extra bit of thrill... and it's realistic. people in a real sub dont' know where it's going to come from, they just look at the hull and pray it doesn't explode.

Sailor Steve 06-13-06 10:36 AM

Yes, it's unrealistic, and it's cheating, after a fashion. I lived without it in AOD and SHI.

Yes, the graphics are fantastic and you really need the external camera to fully enjoy what's going on, especially with the harbor traffic mods.

Yes, I use it, but I have trained myself not to peek when actually in action.

Oh yes I have.

The event camera can be disabled from the Gameplay.cfg (I think). I also think it can be controlled from SH3 Commander, if you use that. You probably disabled it using one of those sources, which means it can't be accessed from the game's Realism screen. I'm probably wrong about the Gameplay file, but it's in there somewhere.

Threadfin 06-13-06 02:05 PM

Other reasons why I think having no externals makes SH3 more challenging include identification. Much more difficult, and you don't instantly know if the target is armed.

All air contacts get treated the same. Dive. No > key to quickly check whether it's friendly. You can no longer watch your torpedos. No externals and event cam combined with manual targeting really is awesome. You set up your shot and fire. The timer ticks past, and no explosion. As you curse your miss the torpedos hit.

The phenomenon that occurs when looking at a silhouette also plays a part. It's often difficult to tell if a target is coming or going.

When I first started playing SH3 I used externals to gawk at everything too. But that novelty only lasts so long, and I eventually want to make things as challenging and realistic as possible. Playing without external views is certainly making ground in this regard. It's like a different sim.

I do use it on occasions it got me out of some tight squeezes and old habits die hard.
