We wish we now have to rely on GR7 and GR9 harriers which are not realy air to air capible.

I bet those Phantoms you got rid of 30 years ago are looking real good right now. |
Heck, that this rate it's only a matter of time before they start hauling out the Swordfishes and Spitfires.... :nope:
|
I wonder what a Swordfish would look like on an AEGIS RADAR... Heck a Cessna sneaked past the majority of the Soviet Union’s air defenses back in the day, could a WWII era biplane make it past AEGIS? :hmm:

What a sad event, two of the great fleet defenders, (Sea Harrier FA.2 and F-14 Tomcat) leaving service at pretty much the same time, shows you what the navy thinks of them... Heres a link to a great BBC video of the SHAR's last carrier ops:http://www.alert5.com/newsphotos/Sea...RN.takeoff.wmv

what was that happening on the tomcat video about 1 min 30 secs into the clip it looked like a cloud stuck to the arse end of the aircraft as it flew over?
what have they replaced the tomcat with? if there were only two sea harrier squadrons what would they do if all 3 of the RN carriers were at sea at the same time?or would that not ever happen? |

As for what they've replaced the F-14 with...I think it's primarily the JSF, or some F-18s. Still a damn shame to see them go...my missus is still in mourning for them  |
F/A-18 E/F/G have entirely replaced the tomcats, known as super hornets these are acctualy alot better and are smaller than tomcats.
|
Uhhh Kap the G is replacing the EA-6B not the F-14. Also the Super Hornet can't carry the AIM-54 and are slower than the F-14 so I would say they are not better than the Cat. Also bigger is better, you are less likely to take critical damage when hit (note how the F-14’s engines are so widely spaced, that’s for a reason: if one is damaged the 2nd is less likely to have been damaged at the same time).
|
i see, but the hornet is smaller so in time of war more can be carried

Seriously the F-14 is all of 1 foot longer and 3 feet wider. |
Not the Hornet vs. Tomcat thing again...

OOoooooooh, moral dilemma... I like the F-18 AND the F-14!! Who shall I pitch for....? MMmmmm Errrrrrr I'VE GOTTIT!! I pitch for the A-10!! *is smacked over the head by fiance* |
what other aircraft do us carriers operate and what for?
|
S3 viking for refueling
E2 hawk eye for AWACS F-18E/F the primary strike fighter / bomber A6 intruder for Electronic warefare MH60 for Search and rescue (not sure on this one please correct) And id imagine it could land any type of helo or carrier capible plane (including harriers) |

EA-6B Prowlers for EW and (Theroicly SEAD) they are now being replaced by the F/A-18G Growler E-2C Hawkeye AWACS S-3B Viking for ASuW, Maratime Recon and ASW (if reequipped) SH-60F Seahawks for ASW and Plane Guard duities HH-60H Seahawks for Strike, Sepc Ops support and SAR They can also carry ES-3A Shadows for ELINT but I think all those have been retired. The C-2 Greyhound for COD can be stored aboard but is genneraly stationed on shore. The only limit on what can land on a US CVN is basicly how it takes off (and if it can land in the given space or has a hook). Some aircraft like French (I think) and Russian fighters don't use the same catapult system (or use a cat system at all in the case of the Russians) |
