Converted Whale Factory Ship 1.0 Released

Here is a first release of my Converted Whale Factory Ship. Except for the fact that it is unarmed, the model should be fine. I added one more skin too, which can be seen below. (two others are in the NCOT thread).

umgebautes Walfangmutterschiff
umgebaute Walkocherei
"Jan Wellem", the first german whale mothership, was a normal freighter which was widened in beam over her entire lenght, which is quite an unusual conversion

GlobalExplorer 03-12-06 05:56 AM

"Walfabrikschiff" ?

Whale factory ship on the way!
Please remember to add the ships name to your englishnames.cfg manually and not to use the names file i´ve put into the package! Otherwise it´ll replace your existing names.cfg and you´ll run into problems...
The ship will be added to Norway Roster.
Please excuse my english! ;)

Great work!!!  :)

Finally some great WIP ships are released.. that´s really great!!
BTW. does somebody know what nations used to have this vessel?

I'm not a native German speaker, but the Greenpeace folks have used the following phrases on their German language website to describe the Nisshin Maru, a modern day whale processing ship (english translations are my own poor attempt).
  • das Fabrikschiff (factory ship)
das Fabrik- und Mutterschiff der Walfangflotte (factory and mother ship of the whaling fleet)
    das Wal-Verarbeitungsschiff (whale processing ship)
das Walfaenger Fabrikschiff (whaling factory ship)

I think "umgebautes Walfangschiff" or "modifiziertes Walfangschiff" should be the best! :know:

Sorry about not answering questions, I just got out of bed.

I'm not sure exactly what nations would have had Whalers converted out of liners, (except for the UK which definitely had them). But the following nations would have had at least conventional whale factories - US, UK, Germany, Norway, Japan, and maybe Sweden and Russia.

Yes, it should appear in the campaign wherever random 101 entries are found. (it is a type 101, but you can change it if you like under the .cfg files) It won't appear in convoys under the stock campaign though. I'm not sure about RUB or IUB convoys.

BTW - A good way to test ships is by making a single mission with the mission editor - it doesn't need to be elaborate.

Also, unlike the NCOT, this ship is not NYGM-based.

Hi!

It seems there have been two kinds of whaling ships since the early 20th century:
  • the kind that harpoons the whale
the kind that takes the carcass and renders it down into oil, meat, bone, etc.
The new model is more the processing ship than a ship with a harpoon (try modeling that kind of damage against a U-boat ;)), so isn't the new model is more of a "umgebautes fabrikschiff" (or whatever) than an "umgebautes walfangschiff"?

Pablo

AG124 03-12-06 09:23 AM

Yes that is correct - smaller whaling boats (about the size of fishing boats) with harpoons would actually kill the whale and tow it to the Whale Factory, which would process it. The Whale Factory which I have made is not a purpose-built one, but one which has been converted from an old ocean liner (there were many of these in service in WW2). This one was based on a picture that Iambecomelife posted - maybe he can post it here again? :hmm:

Once a German commerce raider (forget which one it was) was in the Antarctic and captured a whole whaling fleet. The total haul was 2 Whale Factories, 1 whale oil tanker, and about 10 small whaling boats. :o The whalers were sent back to Germany as anti-sub vessels - I don't know for sure about the other three but I think they were sent back too. Interesting story.

AntEater 03-12-06 10:15 AM

The raider was Pinguin, and both the factories and the hunters were sent to Brest.
The whale factories were used as Tankers, while the boats were used as ASW escorts, either as Vorpostenboote (suffix VP) or as Ubootjäger (UJ).
One of these boats is still preserved in Bremerhaven
http://www.janmaat.de/rau.htm Rau IX served as UJ 1212 with the 12th ASW flottilla. Note the high number which simply means "12th ship of the 12th Flottilla".
The first german whale factory, "Jan Wellem", a converted freighter, was used as a refueller for the ill fated Narvik expedition and burnt out after hits from RN warships.
However, german whaling was restricted to two expeditions in the winters of 36/37 and 37/38 which accounted for about a third of the whales killed in these years.
Whaling was deemed necessary as germany was actually the prime importer of whale oil, which cost foreign currency (which the 3rd Reich was notoriously short of). Before 1933, the risk was essentially too high for german companies to invest in whaling, but after 1933 it was highly subsidized by the state.
After 1945 germany tried to take up whaling again, but that was blocked by the Norwegians.

Yes, that was the one I was talking about. :)

In the account I read, not only were two factories captured, but a tanker used to transport whale oil as well. Is this accurate? The book also listed their names, but now I don't remember.

AntEater 03-12-06 10:45 AM

Btw, why is the whale factory not NYGM compatible??
Too difficult?
I'd like to use it as well.

AG124 03-12-06 11:38 AM

I don't know how to make the ship NYGM compatible - it actually might be. It's hitpoints are the same as for the parent transport though. Maybe DerTeddyBar can help. :yep:
