An increase of n00bs?
Seems like this month there has been at least 400 new posts by 30 new additions to our forums. Where did this come from?? I mean, its cool seeing some supporters of SH3 but when the forum is bogged down with questions like "how do i fire a torpedo", "why does my ship die when depth charged" and "where is the steering wheel" its gets a little much...
Please if your new, research. The sticky's at the top of the thread are more than helpful.. jeez was i this annoying when I first started? (some1 say no) |
bah I just posted questions too, sorry to be annoying

why my torpedoes miss when I shoot destroyers coming after me ?!?
|
Two problems are causing much of this:
1) The main reason: the mediocre panflet that SHIII calls a manual 2) To a lesser degree: the lack of a robust search engine for this forum But your right, most of the questions would be answered if people read the Wiki manual |
Well, I can´t really call myself a hardcore proffessional, but I´ve noticed it too...
Some questions are simple to get answers to if you watch the game tutorial videos or read the manual. I´ve read the manual a few times over and it was easy to start playing a campaign after that... :know: |

wait..that WAS a joke right? |

Just keep trying. |

Seriously, in the last few weeks I've noticed the search engine working much better than it was late last year. |

I tend to stay away from DDs for a few reasons. But I do have one as a kill as well. I shot it as it was turning ahead of me and gave the dive command, it hit the dive was not needed. So far I would not even attempt it while manual shooting unless I had an acoustic torp. I am in 1940 again.

Not worth it for a measly 950 or so tons. Waste your torp on a coastal merchant instead.

As the war years go by, convoys have more and better escorts guarding them. Eliminating a fast destroyer or frigate might open up a convoy's defensive shield enough to rack up some very heavy tonnage. I agree that a major problem here is that SubSim's search index is very incomplete. Newbies can bookmark my SH3 FAQ page, which gives them the essential links needed for getting started. That's what I made it for. :yep: |
You'd waste three torps on one destroyer just on the off chance that a) you'll sink it and b) it will create a hole that the remaining 4 or so destroyers won't fill? :hmm:
Maybe I'm just too risk adverse. I'd rather just shoot them blindly into the convoy. It wouldn't be the first time I've sunk a ship I wasn't aiming for. |

I'm referring to targetting a DE or DD when your Uboat is not detected, when you can determine that the escorts pattern of movement. If you have this opportunity, it is not so difficult to bag the escort with a single torpedo. Any other time is indeed massively risky and a likely waste of eels. |
Now now, lets not be hasty we were all dumb newbs once upon a time, some dumber than others but newbs none the less :know:
I think first we must clarify. A Newb is someone who just doesnt know. A newb can be taught. A Noob is someone who just doesnt know, never will know and never knew in the first place. A Noob cant be taught. So just cause someone comes on here and post a question thats been asked a thousand times doesnt mean they are a Noob. They could just be a lazy Newb. :-j In either case they should be properly ridiculed then we must take the time to instruct them in good forum edicate and hygene lest they continue to dirty up these boards with dead horse beaten posts. |
For some reason I've been getting one "free" T5 torpedo per patrol since late '41, despite them not being available until Jan 43 and with a 500 renown price tag attached.
I tested one out against a destroyer last patrol. Awesome to watch the thing in action. DD never stood a chance. It was all over him like an All Black forward (as in NZ Rugby team - I'd say Wallaby forward, but then people would think I'm joking). Of course, in hindsight, I realised that my mesmerising could have cost me my sub if indeed the torpedo decided to "come home". But I don't think I'll use one in that fashion again, unless I'm really in trouble. |

New players are the lifeblood of our hobby. Without them sub sims will surely wither and die. As well Subsim.com has the reputation of being among the best sim sites anywhere and the people who populate these forums are one of the main reasons.
New players, even when asking some of the most basic questions, have always been welcomed and answered to the best of our ability. That's what had made this place special. I see no reason that should not continue. We were all new players needing help once. JCC |
