No Map Contacts = Unrealistic?

To an extent I believe that no map contacts is unrealistic, if it is the realism feature I am thinking about.

First of all, isn't it reasonable that as long as the enemy ship is in sight, you would have him drawn on the TDC map? With no map contacts the map is completely blank and since you have no tools to draw on the TDC map you cant map the course of an NME ship and plot an intercept course. Doesn't this make the TDC map completely useless? I could be talking out my ass.

CCIP 10-17-05 04:27 PM

I play WaW, and going by the rules there - no map contacts are used at all.

Looking at my tonnage... I can't say I miss those marks at all :hmm:

Twitchy 10-17-05 04:33 PM

How do you do it? You can't draw on the TDC map and you cant pinpoint the ship well enough on the nav map to get a 90 degree shot, so you have to eyeball it? Is that how you are supposed to do it?

BTW WaW realism is Manual Targetting and Weapon officer assistance, right?

Beery 10-17-05 04:41 PM

I used to do it all the time with no map updates and 100% manual targeting completely at the periscope - no map reference at all. If you can judge the course of your target within a reasonable range of accuracy it's very easy to line up a shot. Get perpendicular to your estimate of the target's course. After that, hydrophones and periscope are all you should need. You can always tell when the ship is at 90 degrees to your boat. Fire at that point and it's hard to miss.

Twitchy 10-17-05 04:43 PM

Can you give me a little more detail? I'm not doing that bad myself, I just want to be BETTER at it. When you use the hydrophone in the TDC, do you get the black line that tells you where it is?

And what about my WaW question?

Beery 10-17-05 04:58 PM

I don't know about WaW - I never used it.

I used to do it without any contact lines or anything. You don't need them. Here's what I do. I get a hydrophone contact and I approach it until I get a visual contact. I then dive and mark the position on my world map. If the target is heading away I do an 'end around', marking his position every few minutes until I get a good cours for him. If he's coming towards me I get an approximate course and dive and position myself to get a 90 degree shot. In both cases, once I'm in position I stop and listen with hydrophones. I make small corrections to my angle of attack and get to about 1000 yards off his projected course. Then I wait and listen until he's a few degrees short of being dead ahead. Then I pop up the periscope, take a Range reading, put in the angle (which should be approaching 90), and calculate the speed. This takes 30 seconds max. Then I update the angle to his present position and fire at least two torpedoes with a 5 degree spread.

Pretty complicated. I wish someone would FRAP it and post a video.

Beery 10-17-05 05:09 PM

Actually the only reason I now use the (RUb style) map updates feature is to help me gauge the positions of enemy destroyers when I'm under attack. The game's hydrophone is just not realistic enough to give a good idea of range.

Twitchy 10-17-05 05:30 PM

Whats RUB style map updates? I'm not familiar with RUB

EkimRis 10-17-05 06:06 PM

I just started using rub so I may be wrong or a bit off, but I think the rub style map contacts is just black boxes

Twitchy--

Goto Beery's website and DL RUB. It's his fantastic MOD. Click on his www symbol and it'll take you there..

cheers,

I dunno the concept of "real u boats" sounds very scary to me.
Anyway, I'm playing at WaW realism to get used to it if they lemme in.

Twitchy 10-17-05 06:42 PM

BTW beery's website has been down since I first discovered this forum.

Thanks for the tips! I think I got it covered now, I just sent 30000 tons down to Davy Jones' Locker O_o

don1reed 10-17-05 07:25 PM

WaW uses Rub, btw.

Hmm. Not being able to access readily available websites can be a sign of malware. You might want to check into that. I use TrendMicro's online virus scanner http://housecall.trendmicro.com/.

As for what RUb does, it makes the game a lot more realistic and challenging, as well as fixing some bugs and adding some features. But it's something of a hardcore mod, so you might want to ease yourself into the game before trying it.

You don't even have to put in the angle that last time if you know you will set up for a 90 degree aob shot. Put your scope at 0 degrees straight ahead, go to the tdc and put it in manual mode. Move the AOB dial to 90 left or right and put the tdc back in auto. That's it, you don't have to mess with AOB anymore for the shot or if attacking other ships in a convoy as long as you maintain your 90 degree approach. Set it and forget it.

The only "work" you have to do is get the speed and range. If going after a convoy, speed is given to you in the report, otherwise use the nomograph (provided with RUB on the map) with a few points plotted on the target over a set period of time with the stopwatch. Very simple.

Range should be just as easy if you can ID targets.

My standard attack run on a convoy is to set the speed given from the convoy report right away into the tdc. Get into position and figure out from which side I will approach, then set the 90 AOB on the TDC screen. All you have to do from there is quickly grab the range on the scope notepad before you fire...will hit 99% of the time unless a dud, wrong depth, or a target zig zag.

I HAVE the RUB mod i just dont have any documentation to go along with it :damn:
