How to Kill A Destroyer VERY easily

All you have to do is get its attention, and when goes toward you head on, trying to ram you, fire two torpedoes at 600m. The destroyer will ALWAYS turn to avoid the torpedoes and will take them at a 90 degree angle.

gdogghenrikson 10-16-05 09:58 PM

what type of torp, megnatic or Impact, what speed of torp

Twitchy 10-16-05 10:01 PM

Impact, fast. I used the type I's, but I bet it would work with any torp type

von Buelow 10-16-05 10:25 PM

a theory worth testing  results to follow

Twitchy 10-16-05 10:59 PM

Believe me it works. I did it 3 times in rapid succession.

:o They never did that with me. I use to fire them like you describe it, but they approach to me making zig zags, not turns.
My method is magnetic at 4,50 meters deep, it works 70%.

STAR 80 10-17-05 01:32 AM

If it takes two torps then your doing something wrong.

Leave the fish at default dept and increase to max speed if possible on the selected torpedo.

Get them to chase you, or wait till they come in for a run and just lead your target.

Fire 1 fish and down goes the DD.

I only use manual targeting, so I don't know if the auto is making the mistakes for you guys.

gdogghenrikson 10-17-05 02:36 AM

so far twitchy's method is 50% right, both times I was against a River Distroyer Escort, both times I was using T-II's and fired at 600m with a solvo of tubes 1 and 3.

I will post my results and update as I try more times

so far

it worked 1 time
did not work 1 time

Have you folks been checking this out with various settings for the destroyer AI's crew level? :-?

Martin1813 10-17-05 05:14 AM

this is a quite old tactic. (I've read somewhere that it was used by US sub agaisnt japanese DDs)

Using magnetic TII, bearing & AOB on 0, distance 700, with ahead flank in persicopic depth, the DD has no chance to escape. He will never know when you shoot.
and it's generally a "one hit, one kill"

I find it difficult to believe that this should work in a RL environment :)
I do it like this (I guess most people do):
Starting from a situation where the escort has finally found you at periscope depth and comes running at you at full speed:
identify escort, set torp running depth 0.3-0.5 m below draft (there are drafts between 2.5 and 3.5 m), max torp speed, max sub speed, magnetic detonator, stern tube, fire at 500 m, crash dive.
Gets difficult as the war progresses, especially when they start using Hedgehogs.

Wow, nice!

So the captain of the DD basically have two choices (If he knows you are gonna use this tactic) either he will continue the chase and most propably get hit or he would quit the chase and let the enemy sub vanish to the deeps... and maybe got hit after that. :)

yes I agree with you, I was really astonished.

I think it may has happened a few times but not much more...
:-?

kholemann 10-17-05 01:04 PM

I like to set my torpedoes shallow so that when they get up to the surface, the little nazi flag is automatically hoisted up a small pole above water and the destroyer can clearly see his impending doom approach.

Twitchy 10-17-05 02:35 PM

No guys, no mag torps. No type 2's. You have to LET them see the torps for this to work, otherwise it wont work.

caspofungin 10-17-05 03:00 PM

i just use a falke.

I read a book that say that this tactic was used by Us submarines , but they had a 6 forward torpedos and 2 or 4 in the stern . with a 20-23 reloads.

this make things difficult for the japanese ships, that later in the war where runnig out of destroyers :dead:

it depends. with the technic i described, the DD don't have to turn.
the torpedo comes under the keel and hits the destroyer under the stern artillery (and ammunition depot)

thanks hartmann, I knew I've read it somewhere , I'm not that foolish

Wolf52 10-17-05 03:37 PM

Yeah i would have to say setting it to magnetic to run under the destroyers keel is the best bet. At least then you dont have a shot that may bounce off.

Twitchy 10-17-05 04:12 PM

thats the POINT of this tactic, the torps wont bounce because the destroyer stupidly turns to avoid the torps and takes them at a 90 degree angle
