:) Nice - makes you want to get your hands on the controls.

What class ? What sub ? The chest tag reads- Galleon ?

Kapitan 08-17-05 11:30 AM

its a seawolf the acctual USS seawolf SSN 21

Bellman 08-17-05 11:46 AM

I'm sure that 'steering wheel' will give nice delicate inputs not like our digital inputs....Just like an aircraft ?

It would be great to have analogue control inputs for the subs. rock:

Kapitan 08-17-05 11:50 AM

yeah a msfs flight yoke would be good

LOL - actually - "Diving and Driving" is one of the least favorite watches people stand - usually relegated to the most junior personnel... But I must admit - kinda fun for the first few times you do it...

Scott

A few years ago I taped a special on either Discovery, TLC or History Channel called 'Seawolf'. It was narrated by Luke Skywalker.. er.. Mark Hammil. It had several close up shots of Seawolf control panels, and BB sonar screens. The game is pretty close to the real thing, like the little sub icon in the depth indicator panel and the weapons activation matrix looked very similar. If I can find it, I'll get some screen shots and post em.

I've seen what looks like a big flat display at the sail bridge of a very recent german sub, which moves out when the sub surfaces and retracts back into a protective bay when diving. That makes me assume that their control room also looks much more modern than the seawolf.

If you follow this LINK
you will find the offical wesite of the Bundesmarine (it's in german). On the right side is a box which says "downloads". In it are two links to a short film about the new Type 212 class u-boat. Although it's in german, too, you can see the interior and displays quite well.

the controls of the 212 look ALOT more like modern stuff then in the seawolf, thats for sure

The interface isn't important, its all eye-candy so to speak.
The real deal are the active and passive sensors and I doubt that as of this moment there are submarines which top the seawolf.

Soulchaser 08-18-05 04:23 AM

right, but eyecandy helps alot

LuftWolf 08-18-05 06:58 AM

You're all just saying that because their screens are in color! :-j :P

Yeah 2 color screens :rotfl:
I must admit I hate the color orange gives me headaches, why don't they use green over black its more cool and more relaxing that way.

When the sub's go to "red light" in battle conditions, green displays with red ambient light has been shown to cause additional stress on the nervous system. It's true! :88)

In all my time riding boats - I was seasick once... Pulling out of Hong Kong - long maneuvering watch on the surface - rough seas - rig for red - and - running the BPS-15 radar... Watching the display go round and round and round... Arrgh... :) Red light and green screens didn't sit well with me...

In Sonar we usually had the shack rigged for blue - unless the OOD was entering - we would switch back to red... The blue light was mellow - but - seemed to make you sleepy...

Not really sure if I like these orange displays - or - not... Haven't seen them in real life... In DW - they seem a bit glaring...

Scott

So true. I didn't see anything in that video that would allow any conclusion about the tech level of the U-31 I think it was. As far as the Seawolf goes, cute little digital ships controls doesn't relate to diddly. You can bet the sensor and fire control suites are cutting edge and second to none.

The Russians seem to favor them; I've just been to the K-77 and Rudolf Eglehofer/Hiddensee, and orange displays figure(d) prominently in their radar systems.

http://www.juliett484.org/juliett/juliettphotos.html

Unfortunately, either some of the displays shown in these photos were in compartments that were inaccessible to visitors, or they're photos from another sub. I spent 2 nearly undisturbed hours aboard K-77 and did not see the panels they're showing. Additionally, despite its labeling on the page, http://www.juliett484.org/juliett/images/sonar.jpg is the radar system, not the sonar system.

TG

EDIT: Now that I look thru some of my Submarine Force Museum and Nautilus pics, I see that the old MK113 FCS and WLR-1G ESM system had orange displays too... I'm not sure whether those were just colored plastic overlays to dim the light from the CRT or if the CRT glass/phosphor was actually colored orange.
