Going to see a real VIIC
Ahoy! This weekend I am going to see the VIIC/41 U-995 that is on full display in Laboe, Germany (a little north of Kiel).
I will be taking some pictures and videos and will update here. I have seen other submarines before, but this is the world's only surviving VIIC and I am very excited to see it in real life. Has anyone been to this display? The sub is fully open to tours. Does anyone have anything specific they would like me to check? -JC |
Have fun We(we were a group from subsim meeting)who visit Laboe and U995 in 2009
The Restaurant nearby makes some good food especially their skipper labskovs If the restaurant is still there and they serve this dish. Markus |

Yes, we surveyed the U-boat in Laboe for the game, Wolfpack.

The deck is off limit, not for us it wasn't. When this guide heard who we were we was granted access to the top.

I see your post - very nice, ten hours!! Maybe I'll try some name dropping! I know in most of these things decks and conning tower are off limits. For me, the conning tower is the most important thing I would want to see. As a SH5 captain, I spend half my life up there.

Our ship has docked at Kiel. We are on a ferry boat to Laboe, where the sub is. Very eerie being on the waterway from Kiel.

Ok, mission complete. Click here to see the article (with honorable mentions for subsim.com and Silent Hunter).

I was jealous of those that went on the Subsim meet to U-995 at Laboe.
Now, seeing the pictures, I'm very jealous. :Kaleun_Periskop: :Kaleun_Crying: I'm glad however that those that went to the Subsim meet enjoyed U-995 and meeting each other. :yep: :) |

That being said, I'm not at all surprised U-995 is as well taken care of as it has been. It's very easy to admire the excellent design of the U-boats and the abilities and seamanship of the Kriegsmarine sailors while sharply disagreeing with the policies and Ideology that put U-995 and other Submarines of her kind and other ships, to sea. Quote: Nearly every removable part had been stripped from the boat's interior by the time she went to the museum; she was in no condition to serve as an exhibit, so Museum director Lohr asked for replacements from the German manufacturers who had supplied the boat's original components and parts. Admiral Gallery reports in his autobiography Eight Bells and All's Well that every company supplied the requested parts without charge. Most included letters to the effect that the manufacturers wanted her to be a credit to German technology. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_U-505 |
